Creative Lives podcast 5,”Intergenerational cohesion: Generations, culture, and identity”, presented by Lorna Collins, with guests Michelle Kindleysides and Charlotte Faircloth. 

Charlotte Faircloth is Associate Professor in the Social Research Institute at University College London. From sociological and anthropological perspectives, her work has focussed on parenting, gender and reproduction using qualitative and cross-cultural methodologies. This research has explored infant feeding, couple relationships, intergenerational relations and, recently, the impact of coronavirus on family life.
 
Michelle Kindleysides is Head of Health & Wellbeing at Beamish Museum, a large Open Air Museum in County Durham.  Her role is to develop and facilitate a unique programme of group activities and events at the Museum to help support the health and wellbeing of people living with a range of health needs in the community.  The team began with supporting people living with dementia, both in the community and living in residential homes, and has been diversifying its programmes for the past 8 years.

This episode is a recording of UCL's "More than the right to vote: feminism and citizenship" event, held on 17 February. The panel includes: Professor Sasha Roseneil (chair), UCL Pro-Provost (Equality & Inclusion) (Chair) Dr Victoria Showunmi, UCL IOE Professor Joyce Harper, UCL Institute for Women's Health Professor Ann Phoenix, UCL IOE Event information: Despite the long struggle for women’s suffrage, which was finally won in Britain on equal terms to men in 1928, the right to vote did not grant women fully equal access to political decision-making. Although there have been significant changes over the past four decades, women remain under-represented in politics throughout the world. Moreover, political citizenship is just one dimension of citizenship. Feminist scholars have argued for an understanding of citizenship as multi-dimensional, encompassing not just the terrain of politics, but also economic citizenship, social citizenship, intimate, sexual and bodily citizenship, and religious and cultural citizenship. 

In this panel, academics from across UCL discuss the unfinished business of securing full membership and belonging of society and its institutions for all women. The panel aimed to shine a light on the research of feminist scholars, open up understandings of the multi-dimensional aspects of citizenship, and provide a space to discuss the continued consequences of women’s exclusion to full membership and belonging of society and its institutions.  Panellists each gave a short talk, followed by cross panel discussion, with an audience Q&A. About the Lecture:

This lecture is about the author's practical introduction to critical realism, which won the International Association of Critical Realism annual book prize. The book is based on an annual course conducted at IOE since 2007. The book is a clear time-saving introduction for postgraduate students, researchers, supervisors and lecturers. After decades of conducting sociological research, the author was concerned about gaps and contradictions in the main paradigms. These are addressed in the first chapters, with ways in which critical realism helps to resolve them. Interactions between structure and agency, and whether research can be value-free are then addressed. Two frameworks that greatly help with data analysis, the four planes of social being and four stages of transformative change, are explained, with a final chapter on how critical realism informs effective research. The critical realist concepts are illustrated with examples about health, but they apply to any discipline.

About the Speaker:

Priscilla Alderson
Emerita Professor at IOE - Social Research Institute

Since 1991, Priscilla Alderson has worked at the Social Science Research Unit, now in the Social Research Institute UCL. Her research covers many aspects of health and education, ethics, childhood and children’s rights, and is reported in over 300 publications. In 2014, she started leading the UCL critical realism postdoctoral course, founded by Roy Bhaskar in 2007. Her latest research, published in a series of open access journal papers, is detailed on the UCL website about children’s consent to heart surgery.

A practical introduction to critical realism

Emily Taylor, ECT in Airdale Academy in Castleford, talks about how her strong bond with her mentor has supported her personally and professionally, and how she in turn builds strong relationships with her pupils.
Emily talks about her relationship with her ECF mentor Rachel. She details the professional, practical, and emotional support she received.
Emily shares how her mentor helped her to make a good start in her school, imparted pedagogical content knowledge, and supported her wellbeing as an ECT. In turn, she also makes sure to be a steady adult in her students’ lives, and gives advice to new ECTs about how to build good relationships with pupils.

McQueen addresses making something that is Black and beautiful in depicting justice and freedom, and how art can give recognition to Black British lives by shoring up “who we are, where we came from and what we contributed to this country”.

This podcast is about public health, but more importantly, it’s about the systems that need disrupting to make public health better. In each episode, we’ll be challenging the status quo of this field, asking what needs to change, and why and how can we get there. Each month we’ll be joined by activists, scholars, artists, comedians and industry professionals to offer perspectives from the UCL community and beyond.

Public Health Disrupted - Trailer

Covid-19 and the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement have dominated the headlines in 2020 and taught us multiple things about people and organisations.  The research appears to be more heavily, if not completely, focused on responses to Covid as opposed to the equally important matters of social justice and racial equality brought to the forefront by the BLM movement.  However, there are important leadership lessons to be learned from both crises that can impact the future of organizations.  We will explore five of these lessons focusing on what we have learned at a societal, organisational, and individual level.
