Lighting in the barren winter tree, the crow is observant, knowing - lifting wing in the frozen air, the flock cries echo in the half light as they ascend in fleeting trajectory drawn to an ancient ley.

CONFLUENCE

A song written with an AI synthetic vocalist - she searches for her memories and imagines a future where these memories will live again. "Beyond the Size of Me" continues Hypnomancer's exploration of hybrid musical forms utilizing the multi-dimensional nature of AI to expand beyond a single musical persona. This track merges electronics, field recording and generative AI (vocals and beat making).

Beyond The Size Of Me

While I am more interested in the fleeting images this short piece may evoke, it might also be interesting to know that this is one of the earliest works I produced using digital means. A Mac SE computer controlling a Yamaha TX816 module (all FM sound palette). I composed this in the Cal Arts electronic music studios in the mid 80's. I subsequently composed a number of related works with restrained harmonic movement, repetitive rhythms and a collision of influences from eastern, folk and rock music sources.

GreenLine

Originally an 8-Channel work, "The Siege of Heaven" was written for a production of Jose Rivera's Marisol, directed by Wendy Chapin. The work is centered around vocal processing utilizing a Roland SVC-350 11 Band Analog Vocoder. The resulting music is punctuated by the sound of heavy artillery. The vocal performers are David Stout and Julie West.

Siege of Heaven

Particle Chamber Variation 1.0 (2012), was created utilizing a virtual visualization / sonification environment to model idiosyncratic particle behaviors. The result is an ongoing set of variations in the form of digital films, prints and sound works exhibited under the title, Shadow Box Attractions. This work draws material from a variety of sonfication studies into a single composition. The sonic realization for this project is based on a granular synthesis engine designed with programmer-performer-theorist, Reiner Kramer.

Shadow Box Attractions premiered at the Science Art 2012 exhibition in Moscow. As a larger project, Stout has completed over 2000 individual “particle drawings,” many hours of digital film recordings and is currently working with programmers to expand the audio engine allowing for dramatic manipulation of analogous sonic particles or “grains.” Future variations may include combinations of large format photographic prints, sonic animations and/or a real-time immersive audio-visual environments. Shadow Box Attractions is mindful of the rich cinematic history of abstract film and important *visual music works and, above all, seeks to extend these practices through the use of simulation approaches more often employed in scientific research.

An Immersive sonic journey deep into the glade, where perilous encounters and texture laden colors surround the listener. Created with modular synthesis, clay whistles augmented with an array of digital signal processors.

Invocar Jaguar

Biophilia is a paean to a verdant remnant of a once wild place surrounded by an encroaching spill of housing developments and fracking plants. I created this work as an experience of immersive being - being at the nexus between worlds. Two worlds that have a very different sense of time - an evocation of the state of Time Dilation where one’s experience of the passing of time slows to the point of an infinite now.

Biophilia

Written to reinforce the atmospheric narrative  for a theatrical adaption of "Dracula", written by playwright, Steven Dietz and directed by Nick Mangano -  here Harker is bound by train back to the castle where Lucy is "willingly" held captive in the throws of her immortal transformation.

There are no field recordings or specifically produced foley sounds - all elements come from acoustic instruments and sampled acoustic instruments.

Journey East - looking from my train window through an oracular mirror on the world.  The quicksilver sun melts into a heavy sky. The leaves swept from the trees, momentarily swoop and skitter across the night. Monuments of steel and glass slide by into the shadow of worn brick and lost days. The rails are hypnotic and the smiles of strangers alluring.

A song for Chanter Bots learning to emulate 9th century music that flourished long ago in the monasteries of western into eastern Europe. Imagine this Ai represented by the silver-blue fractal being pictured in the image here. A group of fractal AI's reciting arcane light codes in a virtual translucent Gothic Cathedral with deep resounding synthetic reflections. 2021

Selected music & sound art works created by Hypnomancer (David Stout),  a visual and sonic artist, writer and performer. His earlier works explored the fusion of analog video synthesis, visual art, music and theatre. During this time period Stout composed many scores for dance, theatre and film. David's more recent work includes live visual-music performance, generative animation, interactive video installations and music projects combining acoustic instruments with atmospheric electronics, noise and audio-visual transcoding techniques - see: NADA, Particle Chamber Variation, Reentry and Copter.

He is a founding member of the group, MaDula Hara with singer, Malia Luna. The duo, inspired by global shamanic traditions, is devoted to exploring the healing potential of sound through music, ceremony and ritual performance.
