A fusion of Drum & Bass, Jungle, House and Garage, ‘Together’ is built for the dancefloor. The track borrows vocals and breaks from the early ‘90s, while blending drum machines, bass samples and vintage effect processes crafted by Dexta & Crypticz.

Danny Scrilla debuts on the label with a pair of remixes. The ‘Reslice’, is a great example of signature Scrilla, manipulating the original parts into an exploration of dubby, half time soundsystem music. His ‘Reflop’, meanwhile, is a 140bpm re-think, splicing chopped up breaks and bass stabs from the original along with strong percussion lines and weird vocal edits.

Since his outing on Hospital Records in 2015, and his debut ‘SE4 EP’ on Diffrent Music last year, Dexta – otherwise known as Londoner Chris Royle – has released the third part in an ongoing series for None60 Recordings, honing tracks for dancefloors and stereos alike.

Somerset’s Crypticz (aka Jordan Parsons) has had quite an eventful 12 months, with his ‘Echo Sound EP’ on Doc Scott’s 31 Recordings, and more recently the ‘Forever EP’ Om Unit’s Cosmic Bridge imprint, while evolving his club performance from a DJ set to a custom live show consisting solely of his own music and explorations in sound design. This single comes two weeks after his latest release, the ‘Access You EP’, also on Diffent Music, which set a new benchmark for Jordan, refining his sound to its highest quality.

Danny Scrilla (born Daniel Pirkl) has gone from strength to strength this year, dropping a cassette tape project on Cosmic Bridge, compiled of 16 synth and hardware-led experiments. Last month Dan also released a collaborative 12” with Sam Binga called ‘Weird In Munich’ – a superb effort, pushing boundaries from both their usual styles – before putting out an EP for Amit’s AMAR imprint in early September.

It really is my pleasure to present to you Astrophonica's second full length various artist compilation: Gradients Vol. 2. It carries on seamlessly from where Vol. 1 left off with a mix of label regulars, new names and some real head turners. It took some time to curate given the success of Vol. 1 and I'm very proud of it. The music reflects the label perfectly.

Astrophonica maintain pace in 2020 as Philip D Kick returns to the label with the 6 track “As We Continue”. Following 2018’s “Pathways” Jim Coles aka Om Unit aka Philip D Kick adds some shine and sparkle to his already near perfect and persistent formula. Coles remains dedicated to blurring the lines and joining the dots. As we continue . . .

‘Drips’ sets the pace and opens the flood gates with a flowing groove and lingering bass womps like condensation off a low ceiling. ‘160909313’ steamrolls through with a constant Turbo drum machine drive accelerated by a non stop rolling bass riff. The doors are well and truly blown off in ‘Funk 160’ as a planet rocking breakbeat and infectious chord stabs set the pace with confidence and class. Balmy pads caress a lazy groove in ‘Summer Moods’ and conjure feelings of long evenings and ever lasting sunsets. The Riviera is all bit crushed pads and elite level breakbeat science while you enjoy the passing vistas. ’Clouds’ brings this episode to a close with a smooth glide through the stratosphere and beyond with 4/4 kicks and luscious bass arp.

'This record for me reflects the ongoing conversation between cultures and styles where jungle meets footwork meets techno, 3 cultures that share more in common than perhaps people realise, and for me this is more of a in-depth exploration for example of sonic tropes more prevalent in the world of detroit techno than other previous records. Lakeway's frenetic sound has been running jolts of youthful energy through the drum & bass underground for the best part of a decade. His bold, hyperpop-adjacent, rave-centric style envelopes everything from hardcore and jump-up, to grime, bassline and beyond.

With his newest addition to the Diffrent Music canon, the Exeter-based artist breaks yet more new ground.

Lead track ‘3 Years’, featuring London singer-songwriter Becca Jane Grey, is an unabashed 808 ballad. Powered by the almighty boom of the classic drum machine and flecked with metallic choppage, it brings together neo-soul, trap and jungle in perfect harmony — mournful string swells and percussive chatter juxtaposing the infinite depth of the low-end.

“The beat basically started as a very standard trap/drill bit, which I then tried to make as abstract as possible to set it well aside from the bulk of tunes in those styles,” explains Lakeway. “Becca was perfect for it!”

Taking the track to the next level is Becca Jane Grey’s soaring vocal. She originally wrote the lyrics for a project with Om Unit, but when that didn’t work out, she put them on ice — until Lakeway sent over a beat she couldn’t resist. Her resolute lament on the passing of time and the loneliness of being stuck inside one’s own head, feels even more timely following the struggles of the past 12 months.

“The lyrics reflect holding onto bitterness and grudges,” says Becca Jane Grey. “When everyone around you is telling you to let it go, and you just can't seem to move past something, it can feel like you're completely alone and fully consumed. But there's a lot more to be lost in wallowing or allowing yourself to stay in those dark places. You can lose a lot of time stuck in that headspace.”

On working with Lakeway, Becca says: “Someone that young probably shouldn't be as talented as he is! He's also incredibly patient and accepting of any weird ideas I want to incorporate. His LP is ridiculous and I can't wait for people to hear it.”

Flipside ‘Stamina Crew’ is classic Lakeway energy, turbocharged by all the experience and influences that have seeped into his style over the years. A silky footwork roller with exuberant steelpan fills, it makes one fact abundantly clear: Lakeway is fully primed for the return of raving.

And when that glorious moment does come, it’ll be the track’s titular, pirate radio call out that helps the dancers keep moving through the night: “Big up the Stamina Crew!”

DIFF047 lands as part of a trio of releases from Diffrent’s core artists Dexta, Lakeway and BrandNewTrumpets, each in some way reflecting the past, present and future of the label to celebrate its 11th anniversary. All three are out 26th March on digital and limited edition 10” lathe cut vinyl. Pre-order from the Diffrent Music Bandcamp from 5th March.
