Born and raised in Paris, Crystal Mess has absorbed the myriad sounds of the city’s clubbing underground. From vibing at vogue balls where realness, energy and social change are beautifully in action – and where you can find fellow Parisian DJ Betty Bensimon of the House of Mizrahi behind the decks – to dancing all night to electro, hip-hop, booty and techno in basements and warehouses. Crystal Mess, though, is a woman and DJ very much of her own tastes. “To put it simply,” she says, “regional club music holds a special place in my heart because it’s so deeply rooted to the land in a world that is perfectly globalized and dematerialized. I love playing coupé décalé, kuduro beats, lush synths and uncanny sound designs.” In blending all of this music together in her sets with a passionate and anti-dogmatic mindset, she loves to highlight what she feels is often lost in conversations about what it means to be French in 2017. “I invite people from all horizons and backgrounds to sweat, dance, feel and question,” she says. “DJing is the best medium right now to express myself as a black French femme. It’s about ending The Grand Narrative – like French postmodernist philosopher Lyotard said – and letting people in the margins contribute too. With my set, I tried my best to make my own versions of what trance is collide - the Western one and the African one. It is important, especially in France, where assimilation is a violent, collective reality.”
