Work Mode

The Rebel is a short, high-energy piece for string quintet influenced by
jazz and rock music. It features string techniques used as percussive
effects (col legno, pizzicato and bartok pizz) and other effects such as
glissandos and slides to add the jazz flavor. It begins with a modern,
jagged, rhythmically displaced motives in different meters and develops
into a hypnotic bass groove with improvisatory melodic lines in the
violins.

Matt Van Brink is a composer, pianist, and accordionist living in New York City. Matt is currently piano faculty and composer at Concordia Conservatory (Bronxville, NY), where a recent string of commissions has yielded several one-act musicals and many chamber music works for student performers. He has received many commissions, residencies, and awards and is currently a composer in the BMI Musical Theater Workshops. His work is published by Schott Music, Tenuto Press, and Transcontinental Music Publications. He studied at the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, Indiana University, and Boston University, where in 2005 he received his Doctorate of Musical Arts in Composition. Matt’s teachers include luminaries Samuel Adler, John Harbison, and Lukas Foss.

Our first Radiohead arrangement, Packt Like Sardines in a Crushd Tin Box by Paul Kim, was an experiment fueled by our fascination with the musical world of the band. Our goal was to capture its spirit, creativity and edginess on acoustic string instruments. Inspired by the music in Packt and the powerful reactions of audiences, it was clear that we should do more. The result is this all-Radiohead CD, Everything in its Right Place. It picks up where our chart-busting EP, Disturb the Silence, left off. In the process, our Radiohead arrangements have become crowd favorites at venues including the Apple Store, Carnegie Hall, the Library of Congress and Lincoln Center, and a foundation of our playlist.
