"Ember" is an electroacoustic composition that serves as a sonic portrait of a profoundly inspiring period in my life. This piece reflects my time studying at the Gotland School of Composition in Visby in my early twenties. One of the most breathtaking places in Gotland is Högklint, a cliff reaching 48 meters above sea level located just south of Visby, offering a view of the Baltic Sea to the west and Visby to the northeast. Inspired by the image of this place, I created this piece. Through this composition, I hope to convey the deep connection I felt to both the place and a moment in time.

The "generalbass" roots the original form of the concerto. Everything is carried out musically around this. I focussed upon this impression. Good to connect and remind one's own "generalbass".

Inspired by this week's Disquiet Junto project, I have composed a new Musical Bots track - these are the compositions I create using the generative MIDI sequencer Transition (free VST plugin available at http://www.codefn42.com/transition/index.html). The answer to the question "why do we want our computers to improvise?" seems pretty obvious to me - because tracks like this are created that would never be created otherwise. So I let the musical bots answer that question, and the answer - this track - is also the proof of its correctness...

All instruments were played by groups of bots, with a high degree of randomness in pitch and probability. Additional randomness was introduced to determine whether a particular instrument was playing or paused.

In the background is a field recording I made at Coombe Haven (near Fowey in Cornwall).

Plugin is a creative music and wellbeing project for young people in Birmingham and Coventry aged 12-25 who face barriers to music-making due to being mental health inpatients.

Plugin uses accessible music technology to develop young people’s skills and creativity. The project aims to build participants’ self-esteem, help them connect with others and encourage them to express their feelings and emotions through music. It also aims to build the skills and confidence of setting staff and emerging music leaders in providing creative music-making opportunities for young people with mental health conditions.

Plugin has been based in 4 settings across Birmingham and Coventry this year: Ardenleigh FCAMHS, The Priory Woodbourne Hospital, Birmingham Children’s Hospital’s Parkview Clinic and Cygnet Joyce Parker Hospital.

Thank you to staff at all settings who have supported project activity alongside our project team.
