One is missing its ears (耳朵, Ěrduo), or eyes (眼睛, yǎnjīng), depending on the version.

The other is missing its tail (尾巴, wěibā) and they’re both running fast (跑得快, pǎo de kuài). Very, very strange (真奇怪, zhēn qíguài).

Life in deep East Oakland is dangerous for anybody. In a city with the third highest violent crime rate in the nation, according to FBI data, this pocket has the highest incidence of homicide, gunshots and forced prostitution, according to City of Oakland Weekly Crime Reports. That reality clips the wings of anybody.

Education Voices: Losing friends doesn't get easier

Venessa Ortega, an otherwise accomplished student at Oakland's Unity High School, a charter school, hated chemistry this past year and didn't understand a lot of it. Why? There was no teacher.

"Chemistry is online so you don't get so many hands-on experiments but you do get, sort of, online experience. It is hard to learn though because you don't have a teacher that can advise you or a teacher that can teach you," Venessa told Oakland Local. "Sometimes a teacher comes in and helps us out, but usually there's not."

"At first I responded by really stressing. I didn't know what to do! I was like 'how do I do this?' I needed more help," she recalls of the beginning of the year..." she said. "Everybody [hates] the online thing... For most of us it's stressful."

Online Classes - how some Oakland youth are learning chemistry

In Oakland where some students come into class traumatized by witnessing violence or experiencing homelessness, teachers often need to be more than teachers; they need to be counselors, advocates and bastions of calmness and order in students' lives.
