We are excited to premiere "Bill" by Kuna Maze. With it's lush jazz chords and summery broken beat groove, it's the perfect track to see out the summer, no doubt it will fill a few dancefloors before the summer is out.

Released later this week, "Bill" is the lead track from “My Fish Is Burning", the new EP from Brussels-based producer, DJ and multi-instrumentalist Kuna Maze, aka Edouard Gilbert, due for release on 7th October, via Brighton UK's Tru Thoughts.  

The new single features keyboard player Dorian Dumont, who adds some extra magic touches to Kuna Maze’s layered jazz instrumentation and syncopated broken beat production.

Talking about the wonderfully bizarre EP name “My Fish Is Burning” (a nod to a Detroit-legend) Edouard says: “I was listening to a Moodymann interview on radio, and at one point he says to the interviewer; ‘hold on I gotta go, my fish is burning’. I don’t know why but it made me laugh, like he planned an interview while cooking his fish meal”.

​​Matching the eccentric title – sculptor, painter and long-time-collaborator Cedric Esturillo who produced the EP artwork – interprets the music into a visual form. The duo have been working together on their visual mix series “From Sight To Hearing”.

Boasting releases on Cascade and Galant Records, as well as remixes and collaborations with the likes of Andreya Triana, Blu Samu, Black Josh, Ødyssee, Katuchat, Woodwire, Winston McAnuff (plus loads more!), Kuna Maze has found a new home on the Brighton-staple Tru Thoughts, turning his hand to the resurgent sounds of jazz-infused broken beat.

Kuna Maze also has a duo project with Lyon-based producer Nicolas Morant aka Nikitch. Their excellent 'Débuts’ record is out now on Tru Thoughts, and has been remixed by no less than Domu.

In summer 2019 @kassiansound self-released their ‘Kassian Versions’ series, a vinyl only edits label which placed at no. 6 in Phonica’s Top-10 Singles of 2019 with multiple represses since. Autumn 2021 marks their second EP on the hand-stamped edits imprint with another massive 12" of disco-edit jams produced in their Hackney Wick studio, 38East. CoOp Presents are pleased to "welcome" back Oliver Night, with a brand new six-track EP, including remixes from Atjazz and Mitch von Arx.

Following up his brilliant early 2019 EP 'Make Believe', his EP once again illustrates Oliver's prowess for producing deep bruk business. This follows releases on the label from the likes of EVM128, Groove Chronicles, Risa T, LCSM, Sivey, Neue Grafik, Danvers & Reginald Omas Mamode, furthering the mission statement of label bosses IG Culture & Alex Phountzi to create a strong platform for new bruk talent and beyond, from London to the world.

For those that don't know, East London's Oliver Night is a rising talent in the bruk world. In addition to his own productions, collaborating with artists such as Jay Phelps & BB James, he recently featured on Adelaide producer Inkswel's 'Trippin' (which reached No.1 on the Traxsource Deep House chart) on Atjazz's label, as well as the title track of his new album 'Chasing Infinity' (which also features Lee Scratch Perry, Steve Spacek, Mr Scruff, Dudley Perkins, Kaidi Tatham & Talib Kweli of Black Star). There were also recent features on Parisian producer Quiet Dawn's highly acclaimed 'Movements' EP on Worldwide Award-winning London label First Word Records, and on Jimpster's recent album 'Birdhouse' on Freerange Records.

Now approaching two decades in the DJ game, Oliver was originally a member of Roots Manuva's Banana Klan, and nowadays is a regular player for the Selectors Assemble gang. He's played at various venues across the capital, from the Tate Modern to Boiler Room, and on Worldwide FM with the CoOp Presents crew. Previous support has come far and wide from selectors such as Tony Humphries, Kerri Chandler, Jazzie B, Gilles Peterson, Kid Fonque, Rainer Trueby, Jamz Supernova & Seth Troxler, and press from the likes of Bolting Bits and Music Is My Sanctuary.

So to the new EP... An entirely self-produced solo effort, it kicks off - of course - with 'Welcome', the title track. A deep commanding vocal leads the proceedings, accompanied with some Detroit Techno-tinged keys, acid squelches and occasional chopped Jungle-esque breaks. We follow this with a piece of 'Heart' - warped arpeggiated synths lead the way here, whilst also featuring some seriously soulful vocals again from Oliver himself. Things get tougher next with 'Bruk N Bass'; as the title suggests, this one has some heavy D&B influences with a seriously growling b-line and ravey synth stabs, riding a fiery bruk backbeat. The EP closes out on a more leftfield tip; 'Slated' is a deeper one, which begins with a brooding key pattern setting things off in a slightly deceptive fashion, before switching to some stripped- back bruk, containing just the right amount of sample hits and bassweight, with a mind-melting breakdown midway to boot. The set is complete with two firing remixes from Atjazz and Mitch von Ark respectively.

Oliver says "this EP is a fusion of my favourite genres - broken beat, soul, techno, house and drum 'n' bass. I've put my 'Heart' into this and would love to 'Welcome' you into my ever evolving world..."

The second release on Escola Records from Barcelona is a split EP between two duos that takes the listener on a voyage through futuristic deep house and broken beat, with original tracks by Karmasound & Sara Bee and JP Sunshine & Guim, plus remixes by musclecars and Hugo LX.

Barcelona-based Karmasound and Sara Bee team up to deliver the opener, the uplifting, soulful summer anthem “Esperándote.” Featuring choppy live drums, jazzy keys, and sweet, melodic vocals by both parties, the track draws on Karmasound’s primary influences: candombe, Latin jazz, broken beat, and soulful house.

APPAREL PREMIERE: El Payo - Black Girl From Soweto ft. Sio [Stay True Sounds]

London-based Irish producer Bruk Rogers aka Cian McCann (Zero T/Zero Tolerance/Searchlight) signs to Brighton-stable Tru Thoughts and shares new single “LDN 313”, a sonic clash between the cities of London (LDN) and Detroit (area code 313). 

“LDN 313” combines London beats and basslines centred in the genres of bruk/broken beat and grime –  layered with Detroit techno stabs and pads, influenced by the soundscapes of the iconic Mad Mike (Underground Resistance). “There's an obvious nod to Marc Mac's Nu Era productions in the synth parts also” Bruk Rogers added. 

The Bruk Rogers alias was born out of Cian’s long-held love of the broken beat genre, and its recent resurgence spearheaded by labels such as Tru Thoughts, Rhythm Section International, Selectors Assemble and Eglo Records. Aesthetically and eponymously influenced by watching endless reruns of the 70s sci-fi adventure series Buck Rogers, the mischievous alias was coined with the help of a friend. “My older brothers wanted to call me Twiki – so it’s all a bit of good fun and kitsch nostalgia!” Cian says.

Rewinding 20+ years from now; Cian (as Zero Tolerance) had his first jungle tracks signed to 4hero’s Reinforced Records and was exposed to the heart of the burgeoning broken beat scene just by hanging out at their Dollis Hill studio. He was also highly influenced by going to CoOp at Plastic People and frequenting Jazz:Refreshed at MauMau Bar.
 
Back to the recent present: Cian was booked to play a DJ set at the ‘virtual’ We Out Here Festival in 2021 and decided to play a bruk set. He had so much fun that he decided to start making some bruk beats straight afterward. Debut releases on Afronaut & Mark Force’s CoOperation label have been very well received, with wide-ranging support from BBC 6Music, Gilles Peterson, Jazz FM, Spotify Japan and many more. He has also done some remix work for Kid Fonque’s Stay True, CoOperation and Tru Thoughts.

Cian is also a member of the jazz-soul duo Searchlight alongside fellow Irish producer Dominic Purcell (Beat 2), Their self-titled debut album featuring the likes of Children of Zeus collaborator [ K S R ] recently dropped on legendary Goldie’s Fallen Tree 1hundred label and has seen heavy support from tastemakers Mary Anne Hobbs, Gilles Peterson and Benji B, as well as being named Huey Morgan’s (BBC 6Music) Record of the Week. 

Joining Tru Thoughts in 2022, Cian’s first introduction on the label was via a DnB remix for soul sister duo MELONYX’s “Energy”, under his Zero T moniker. Bruk Rogers enters a new intergalactic chapter partnering with Tru Thoughts, a label renowned for championing futuristic broken beat talent (WheelUP, Lanu, Jonny Faith, Afronaut – to name a few). Expect a lot more beats from the 25th century for the foreseeable future, from this sonic astronaut and adventure hero.

Exclusive Premiere: Bruk Rogers "LDN 313" (Forthcoming on Tru Thoughts)

CoOp Presents is incredibly proud to present an all-new compilation album put together by Allysha Joy. This 14-track LP gives us a solid glimpse into the current wave of Antipodean bruk / broken beat artists.

Allysha explains "the connection began with a guest mix for CoOp Presents Worldwide FM radio show. I was asked to guest on the show, so pulled together some heavy unreleased and unmastered "Australian" broken sounds. I immediately called Horatio, Close Counters and Setwun, some of my nearest and dearest inspirations and collaborators to get them in the mix! Within 24 hours I had a brand new beat from Setwun called 'H.B.Y', I ran up some vocals on a Close Counters track and landed a wild jazz-bruk collaboration called 'Fly' from Horatio Luna and Nikodimos! We all felt really blessed to be linking in with some of the innovators of the sound we love!

Also in the mix, I played a track by Lanu a.k.a Lance Ferguson, one of "Australia's" funkiest songwriters and producers. Mike Gurrieri and Chris Gill over at Northside Records had already been scheming to set Lance and I up on a music date for weeks, which turned into writing 'Rewind' . Lanu, along with Ennio Styles, have been integral in the broken beat sound down here from the early 2000s and they connected Jonny Faith in to bring 'Southern Stepper'.

After linking in over the music and working on some collaborations, Alex Phountzi and IG Culture asked me to put together this compilation. The first person that came to mind was Sampology. A wild ride of shifting harmony and incredible vocals, Sam delivered 'Sunny', featuring Maia. Also of Middle Name Dance Band acclaim and a beaming light of creative energy, Kuzko created 'Immunity' for the comp — their debut solo release!

Also up in Meanjin, Special Feelings and Squidgenini were making their own style of jazzy house music and we absolutely knew that they would kill it on the broken beat tip. They sent through 'On Heat' and 'Prophecy' respectively, and inspired me to write and produce 'Listen'. A track about the struggle to be heard as female and non-binary artists. A hard-hitter mixed by co-collaborator Yelderbert of our new duo project, Totek.

As my brother and the one that first introduced me to Agent K, I knew we had to get Ziggy Zeitgeist up in the mix! He immediately sent over a bunch of tunes, and from alongside all of the 30/70 Collective demo drum loops and fresh Z.F.E.X sounds, we selected 'Bruk Samba' featuring Cody Curry, the CC Dance Orchestra.

I had managed to pull together a bunch of tunes for the compilation and after a studio session one afternoon I was walking down Sydney Road and bumped into Silent Jay, Alien and A.KID a.k.a. ACID SLOP at their new spot, the Mandarin Dreams HQ. We were just chatting and above Jay's head I spotted the New Sector Movements record, 'Download This'! To see that they'd just been spinning this record felt so serendipitous, so I had to ask them to be on it! Acid Slop sent me through a tune literally the next day, called 'Everything Falls Apart' and within the week we got 'Walk Away', from Lori and Silent Jay. It felt complete.

The way that this music just effortlessly and lyrically fell together, is a testament to the broken beat undercurrent that runs within the jazz and dance music scene down-under. 'They're Energised' connects a scene of deeply talented and inspired musicians, collectively shaping the new wave of uniquely "Australian" bruk and broken beat music!"
