The victory had further significance for being the first crushing defeat of a European power by African forces during the European scramble of Africa. 

Tewodros Kassahun Germamo (Amharic: ቴዎድሮስ ካሳሁን ገርማሞ; born 14 July 1976), known professionally as Teddy Afro, is an Ethiopian singer-songwriter. As influential figure, Teddy Afro is dubbed as "the greatest artist of all of time" and renowned for conveyance in political sentiment. Teddy Afro is considered as having a huge cultural impact on the Ethiopian music industry and has a big influence on many aspiring artists. Teddy Afro is often compared to Tilahun Gessesse for his unique ability of songwriting, musical style, and nationalistic sentiments. His 2017 song "Ethiopia" has over 19 million views on YouTube.

Professor Ashenafi Kebede > The Shepherd With The Flute. Ethiopian Instrumental Music

The Shepherd with the Flute is originally written and arranged by the late Professor Ashenafi Kebede. Professor Ashenafi Kebede (Amharic: አሸናፊ ከበደ; 1938 – May 8, 1998) was an Ethiopian composer, conductor, ethnomusicologist, historical musicologist, music educator, novelist, and poet.


He founded the National Saint Yared School of Music in Ethiopia, serving as its first director (1963–1968).

He was designated a National Composer by Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie I, in 1967. Shortly after that he began his graduate studies in the United States, and earned the first Ph.D. in ethnomusicology at Wesleyan University.

Ashenafi was a prolific writer. His works include a novel, Confession (1964), articles in ethnomusicology journals, the book Roots of Black Music, and numerous articles in The Chronicler, the magazine of the Center for African-American Culture.

In his own compositions he combined Ethiopian and Japanese musical ideas. "Koturasia" is one such piece, written for flute, clarinet, violin, and Japanese koto. Among his other musical compositions were "Peace unto Ethiopia" and "The Life of Our Nation". His best-known composition, though rarely heard outside Ethiopia, was "The Shepherds Flute", performed in 1968 with the Bulgarian Symphonic orchestra.

In the United States, he was director of the internationally known Ethiopian Research Council,[1] consisting of a group of Ethiopian and American scholars and professionals. At the time of his death he was director of the Center of African-American Culture at Florida State University in Tallahassee, Florida.

Eyob Mekonnen (12 October 1975 – 18 August 2013) was an Ethiopian reggae singer-songwriter and musician widely considered as progenitor of reggae music in Ethiopia. His songs were well known for their themes of "love, understanding, and respect".

By 1978, censorship laws prevented Mahmoud from releasing his music on vinyl and so he switched to releasing cassettes. In the 1980s, Mahmoud operated his own music store in Addis Ababa's Piazza district while continuing his singing career. With many Ethiopian refugees living abroad, Mahmoud became one of the first modern Ethiopian music makers to perform in the United States on a 1980-1981 tour with the Wallias Band, Gétatchew Kassa, and Webeshed Fisseha. Mahmoud soon began releasing records with the Roha Band and became popular in diaspora communities.

In 1986, Mahmoud's music reached a larger western audience when the Belgian label Crammed Discs released the collection Ere Mela Mela drawn from two Kaifa LPs Mahmoud had recorded in Addis with the Ibex Band a decade earlier. Ethiopia was making headlines in the west because of political repression and famine, and the contrasting tone of Mahmoud 's first international release received much acclaim in the burgeoning world music community. Mahmoud gained even greater international popularity in the late 1990s after Buda Musique launched the Éthiopiques series on compact disc. This led to new recordings and tours in Europe and the United States with Boston's Either/Orchestra and Badume's Band. Though he has made his home in Addis and works with a number of NGOs and philanthropic causes, he continues to tour internationally, performing concerts both for world music fans as well as the Ethiopian diaspora.

In 2007, Mahmoud won a BBC World Music Award.

Born and raised in Addis Ababa, Tewodros Tedesse was able to transcend age gaps and reach people from different age groups and is loved by a varied audience.

Having started music in a church choir, his big break came when he was invited to a wedding to sing Muluken Melesse’s ‘Wasa Megena'. This left a mark on his singing career.

When he started performing, he was doing cover songs of renowned artists. The feedback was encouraging for him, so his first album, ‘Lubanjaye’, easily broke the market. It did not take him that long to become a household name though. His consecutive albums ‘Eyekorekoregn’, ‘Sadulaye’ also became a huge success.

Many of his songs are like national anthems which are sang by people from different age groups, especially the song ‘Emeye Ethiopia’ was somehow unforgettable. He toured many countries, taking the stage with his unique, vivacious voice.

His fifth album, ‘Semeto Zzemale’, was also done before he left for the US, but the album was released after he arrived in Virginia. During his stay abroad, he performed in many places and also revealed in many interviews how life was not easy for him there.

Many music critics say his 1997 album, ‘Zimita’, was different from his previous ones as it was more influenced by jazz and also gave new sound to his fan. Even though he started working on his album in 1998, the hurdles in his life got the better of him and he could not focus on his work. Returning to Ethiopia was a different phenomenon, he says. His fans, which have not seen him for the last 17 years, overwhelmed him by showing up at the airport and expressed their love by hugging and greeting him.

During his stay in Ethiopia, he performed in different venues before going back to the United States. In 2009, he established an independent studio. Now residing in the States, Tewodros performs in different venues in the States. Tewodros Tadesse, as the vice president of Yo Yo records, is aiming to represent Ethiopian music on the international stage.

His new album targets Ethiopians and the world music audience, who also have the taste for alternative music apart from the mainstream popular beats. After the album release, the artist has a plan to tour different parts of the world.

Neway Debebe (ንዋይ ደበበ)is born In the rural part of Ethiopia in Hamer Bako, Asela singer Neway Debebe started music while attending Ras Andarge high school. He made a huge contribution to the school band. Having acquired a great deal of music experience while playing in the school band, Neway Debebe moved to Addis Ababa to make his dreams come true. While in Addis Ababa he joined Ambassador theatre which was organized by Ato Tesfaye Lema later he joined Ras Theatre’s traditional band.

He released his first album in the 1970’s with Roha Band which was recorded by Tango Music Shop. Neway Debebe has released six albums and has featured on other albums by fellow artists.

A coincidence that was meant to happen. 

Jano band and Pamfalon just released a song called Andnen, which is the Ethiopian term for Unity.

They came unexpectedly together when Jano was spending time in Munich after their Show at the 12. Ethiopian Sports and Culture Festival.

The Band and Pamfalon decided to do a reggae song that describes the vibes within the band and among Ethiopian youth worldwide, despite different ideas and place of origin and ethnicity.  

After spending a day in a studio, they came up with this amazing track called Andnen.

The track was recorded and mixed in Munich (Qedamawi Studios).
