After dropping several tracks and performing at select festivals throughout the years, Ólafur Arnalds and Janus Rasmussen dedicated the year 2014 to explore the area in-between Ólafur’s more acoustic, piano-based solo work and Janus’s synth-heavy electro pop, with their collaborative electronic project Kiasmos.

By focusing solely on their self-titled debut album, Ólafur and Janus have been able to combine and further develop their unique sound aesthetics to complete an album driven by their mutual love for electronic music. Made in Ólafur’s newly build studio in Reykjavík, Iceland, a majority of the album was recorded using acoustic instruments next to a variety of synthesisers, drum machines and tape delays. It features a live drummer, string quartet and Ólafur performing on the grand piano, producing an ambient, textured sound, which makes it a perfect home listen and equally danceable record. If you listen closely, you can spot them record the thumb piano, finger snapping and even the sound of the metal grinder of a lighter slowly to replace the usual electronic hi-hat sounds, giving the album a far more intimate and unique atmosphere.

“We decided to start almost completely over with this record, so most of the material is written this year with the idea of making a record that can stand as one piece rather than a collection of songs. I am very excited to get a proper record out exploring a different territory than I am used to. I touch a lot on electronic genres in my own music but never have the opportunity to go full out electronic like we do here.” – Ólafur Arnalds

Remember about the old “United we stand, divided we fall” slogan ? Punish Yourself (“Cult Movie”, “Pink Panther Party”…) and Sonic Area (“Insensé”, “Explore”) probably had this in mind when they decided to join forces on a common record. “Phenomedia” is not a classic split-album, or a collection of mutual remixes, but a full fusion of both musical universes - resulting in completely exclusive tracks, going far ahead of anything you would expect. Influenced by Hint, Download, Pentaphobe, Foetus, Coil or The Downward Spiral, but mostly by the hypnotic power of mass media, Arco (Sonic Area’s mastermind) and vx “cheerleader” (PY singer and programmer) tried to break all stylistic boundaries and restrictions, in a merciless attempt to decipher the “Real World” or at least give some aural image of his morbid complexity. Dense, nervous, sometimes hard to describe, “Phenomedia” mixes cinematic orchestral atmospheres, dirty hip-hop, tribal industrial techno-punk, brutal wall of sounds, hard-glitch breaks and lush ambient soundscapes – and if you think it’s too much, you’re probably right ! This is a shamelessly noisy freaks parade announcing the “Nightmare Before Apocalypse” : acid bass lines, explicit TV sampling, screaming saxophones, broken drum machines collapsing into moody organic percussions, melancholic piano arpeggios and cello, distorted blues guitar, suicide lullabies, whispers, incantations, rants… This is hard cut-up music for chaos lovers, topped with broken bits of post-industrial mythology – the Roswell Alien, Kurt Cobain, Elvis Presley, Hakim Bey, Nikola Tesla, Jim Jones, Timothy Leary, JF Kennedy and many more unwilling guests. Do you feel like you’re part of a media-traumatized generation ? Do you feel addicted to the continuous stroboscopic flow of information, entertainment, spiritual promises and advertisement delivered by TV, the internet, movies, radio ? Is channel/net-surfing/scanning/hopping your favourite killing-time drug ? Do you feel like nothing is good enough, real enough, awesome enough for you ? How can you spend more than twenty seconds of your precious attention span if this record is just another product of the music industry ? Who’s the next scapegoat ? Who’s the next star ? Who’s the next Guru ? Who’s the next Prophet ? What’s the next distraction ? What’s the next thrill ? What’s the next reason to believe in something ? Should you buy a new laptop ? What should you fight for? Money ? Power ? Disorder ?

PUNISH YOURSELF vs SONIC AREA ici bas

This is another cassette demo that I recently unearthed, saving it from decay. It's a ragged little shard of a track called 'Derailer' that's stripped down to bare bones. It was written down on the Lower East Side in mid-1991 in a dank basement apartment Detox lived in for a few months before he accidentally set it on fire almost burning the building down. The people that owned the apartment not-so-politely asked him to leave. Lucky he made it out without getting kneecapped. Seems like fire and collapse followed us all across the city during the writing of Burn Out, always flickering darkly at the frayed edges, often running up out of control behind the control panel when we weren't paying attention.

The track will form a part of the compilation of demos and out-takes called "Burnt Out (talkin' shit and shootin' smack)" that will hopefully appear in the not-too-distant future.
It features Detox on loop-hack and me on vox-hack. Although Steve "fly" Watson and Mark "fiendish" Kermanj were working with us at the time, these demos are almost all pre-guitar and drums. Yes, the sample at the start is for real and is excerpted from a phone message left on Detox's machine from a guy he knew. The whole message ran for over five minutes. I'll tell you the story some day if you don't already know it.

This track is another one that's available for download though the next few won't be. Yes, there are more to come while I decide what to do with the whole mess. Enjoy the drugged and drunken stumble down Memory Lane!

Derailer - demo

Pulse (finger off) is what eventually became ‘White Room Black Eye’, one of my favorite tracks off of the 2004 Chemlab album “Oxidizer”. 

I’m posting this version naked, with all its imperfections because there’s something glorious about its frayed figure. 

The other reason that I’m posting it is because, as autumnal shadows start to elongate and nights close in I’ve been thinking about Jamie a lot. This isn’t the album version, it’s pre-, it’s demo, early, fractured and slewed off course. I adore it because it’s raw and unvarnished for mass unpopular consumption. Jason’s programming snarls rabidly, its sexual propulsion unfiltered. My vocals are ugly, burred at the edges (my natural two-packs-of-smokes-and-a-bottle-of-whiskey-a-day distortion shining through in all its fucked unglory). In the outro “down”s you can actually hear shreds of F.J.s backing vocals beckoning down the hole. 

But, the thing that really blows me away, that utterly knocks my lights right out is Slo-Hand's’s unhinged guitar. Like some static drenched cyclone of sonic white light it hustles and torques underneath the song until about 2:19. From that point onwards it breaks its cage, howling straight through the mix to rocket launch a fist into the frontal lobe. It’s scorched earth, it’s canisters of napalm tumbling out of the sky, it’s urban center dirty bomb detonation. 

Funny thing (or not): when I posted this link I was trying to remember exactly who had played this riff. For a long time I was sure that it was Greg Slo-Hand Lucas, but in the folds of time I got must have got lost (as Peter Wolf said) and this guitar madness became Jamie's horns and gown instead somehow. I posted it with the credit going to Jamie and, sensibly, Lucas wrote to me and said that although he loved Jamie's guitar playing as much as the next guy, that slice of searing genius was his, thank you very much while you're up. 

So, kids, as much as the drug-addicted life style of the purported "rock star" may have its shiny attraction and dissolute appeal, the reality is standing right before you. I went stumbling headlong into total addiction not by mistake or chance intervention, but by clear and definite choice. I saw Iggy crash and Keith burn out and I thought that was the most fascinating part of the package: the hampered, damaged, limping lifestyle of waste behind mirrorshades. I learned all the wrong lessons from the right guys and blindly, laughingly drove a truck loaded with pills and powders and syringes and bottles and smoking reefers straight through the heart of my career, my band, my record label, many of my friendships and my first marriage and into sheer wipe out, and it wasn't pretty. No, not at all. Though I've been clean of everything for over a decade, my memory has suffered countless direct hits and the long-term damage is immeasurable...except in clearcut cases like this. 

Greg Lucas, I apologize. This riff's for you. It's a fucking standard of destruction I return to again and again and again.

Sadly, the final version didn’t retain all of that slingshot madness, that nasty and unholy magic. Maybe that's because Greg was just too spicy to remain in the mix unvarnished, unfiltered, unafraid.
Or maybe I just can't remember the reason why...

Pulse (finger off) - White Room Black Eye demo

One of my favorite remixes of Binary Nation from OXO. 
It was done by a cat named Latin Saint whose sounds you can still find hustling his scene on myspace. He was the runner-up in an acidplanet remix competition. The acidplanet guys thought that this was an excellent remix but that acidplanet would be better represented by the other group that finally won. Over the years I've come to regret letting the decision be made by others instead of imposing my opinion on them. This is the remix that should have won out hands down, in all its digitally ragged punk rock glory. 
So, I toss it out here for your delectation.
