In this episode we invited Dr Sadhbh Lee, Obstetric and Gynaecology registrar in the National Maternity Hospital, to discuss the interconnected nature of health and the environment. As a founding member of Irish Doctors for the Environment, she described how the organisation came to be and provided valuable advice on how to contribute to environmental initiatives.

Diarmuid O’Donovan is Professor of Global Health at Queen’s University Belfast and honorary consultant in public health at the Public Health Agency in Northern Ireland. In this episode, we speak to Colin Roche, the programme coordinator for Climate Justice and Energy at Friends of the Earth Europe. Colin has worked for over 20 years in global justice campaigning, previously working for Oxfam in Ireland and internationally, and with other campaign groups on trade, finance, corporate justice, climate and other issues. He discusses the early influences that inspired him to become a climate justice activist from school Concern debates, to currently working on the EU Green Deal. He emphasizes how climate change affects all aspects of our lives, across the whole globe, with heavier impacts in the global South. He also shares his experience of working to stop oil pollution in Nigeria.

Episode 6: Global and Planetary Health and Advocacy with Viveka Guzmán

In this first episode, the 2020 address, Father Michael spoke of the concurrent crises of COVID-19, HIV, and climate change. The World Health Organisation has warned that because of COVID-related service disruptions the supply of drugs for HIV prevention and treatment may be at risk, leading among other things to huge increases in new HIV infections, particularly among children. He called on us all to show solidarity with all actors in their struggle against HIV at this time when its impacts are worsened by these intersecting crises.

Episode 1: 2020 – Solidarity in the Face of HIV at a Time of Global Crisis

In this episode, the 2019 address, Father Michael highlighted the benefit of getting girls into school, and keeping them in school, in order to lower the risk of HIV in this group. 

Young women aged 15 to 24, are at very high risk of becoming HIV infected. Girls tend to have a lower rate of HIV testing, leaving them unaware of their HIV status, and much more likely to unknowingly transmit the infection to others. A girl's risk of becoming HIV infected, drops substantially, the longer she stays in school.

Episode 2: 2019 – HIV and Women: Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights

In this episode, the 2018 address, Father Michael focused on the global theme of “leaving no one behind”, and identified the groups who are commonly left behind in the struggle with HIV and AIDS; the economically poor, women, children, adolescents and the young, people of diverse sexual orientation, sex workers, injecting drug users, prisoners. Father Michael reiterated the importance of reaching every person who is in need.

In this episode, we speak to Líbhan Collins. Líbhan currently works in pharmaceutical clinical trials. She has a degree in Health and Society from Dublin City University and a masters in Immunology and Global Health from Maynooth University. She undertook her MSc. thesis in Maastricht University where she did collaborative research on vaccine programmes and hesitancy. She did an internship with Gorey-Malawi Health Partnership and has done volunteering in various capacities. She is passionate about the use of evidence-based and locally led interventions in disease
prevention.

We are delighted to welcome you back to our podcast with this third episode in the series, we welcome Ngozi Elobuike. A global scholar and cultural broker, Ngozi has an insatiable taste for examining power asymmetries, strategic problem solving and developing human potential. Currently, she is a Race, Migration and Decolonial Studies M.A. student at University College Dublin and has a B.S. in Biology from Howard University and a M.S.c. in Global Health and Development from University College London. To add, she is a trained activist that has travelled far to lead a grassroots project in Malawi, Africa around youth development but has also brought her project management skills to community organising in her hometown of Stockton, California.  As a champion of critical thought, decolonial DEI and community centred praxis are her forte.

Better Health, For a Better World - Mid-Season Break Look-Back at Season 1 Part 1

In this episode, we welcome three guests to the series; Patrick Empey, Ireland's Ambassador to Mozambique, Biatriz Manriquez Rocha, Program Director for Maternal, Neonatal, and Child Health, Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI), and Chishamiso Mudenyanga, Program Director for HIV and AIDS, Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI). 

Our guests today will examine the progress being made in terms of maternal and child health, and HIV, in Mozambique, and the challenges that still remain in these areas. They will also spotlight the work that is being done to increase access to services for everyone, particularly harder to reach populations.

She holds an Executive Master’s in Management of International Organizations, SDA Bocconi, School of Management, Italy; Masters in Economics and Policy Analysis from the University of Nottingham; and Masters in Public Health from the University of London.

Interwoven Lives, Threads of Hope: Exclusive Interview with UNFPA's Jacqueline Mahon

Welcome to the Decolonising Global Health Podcast by the Irish Global Health Network (IGHN) and the IGHN Partnership Programme.

In this episode, we chat with Brittney Mengistu and Moné Vasquez about what Decolonising Global Health means to them, and how they practice decolonisation in their daily work. 

Brittney is a feminist scholar, postdoctoral researcher, and lecturer in Global Health at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. Her research interests include participatory methodologies, humanitarian health, and the anthropology of mental health and migration. Brittney advocates reflexive and inclusive practice in global health by incorporating a decolonial feminist lens into her research and teaching.

Moné is a mestizo-Mapuche scholar, researcher, and lecturer at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, where they are currently pursuing a PhD in Indigenous identity politics and its intersections with issues of food, water, knowledge, and territory. Their research delves into the complexities of Indigenous identity within contemporary socio-political contexts. Their work entails engaging with Indigenous communities, exploring their perspectives, and advocating for their rights and self-determination.
