Farming is deeply embedded in Ireland's culture, society and economy. Yet it is under pressure from many directions, just like the critically endangered freshwater pearl mussel. Can we restore populations of the mussel while at the same time building greater resilience in farming communities?

The idea for a 'Shannon Wilderness Park' was born nearly 20 years, after it was clear that mining peat could not go on forever. While there are those who are still convinced that the bogs can be put to a commercial 'use' it is increasingly apparent that re-wetting and rewilding all of the bogs across Midlands provides the best solution for nature, climate and people.

About the panelists: 
Cepa Giblin is an Emmy-nominated documentary filmmaker who has worked with Crossing the Line since 2005. She has produced films for international broadcasters including BBC, PBS, ORF, France TV, and RTÉ. Cepa’s career highlights include producing On a River in Ireland, an acclaimed documentary on the River Shannon, nominated for three Emmys and winner of the Golden Panda and Grand Teton awards. She also directed the Grierson Award-winning Wild Ireland – The Edge of the World, the Jackson Hole-winning Broken Tail, and the IFTA-winning series Wild Cities. With a background in Environmental Science, Cepa’s work spans nature, wildlife, and conservation, as well as children’s programming, travel, and historical documentaries.

Eoin Warner is a wildlife documentary presenter in both Irish and English, known for hosting some of Ireland’s FOREMOST nature documentaries. He presented Ireland’s Wild Islands, a deeply personal journey around Ireland’s coast in a Galway Hooker, undertaken in memory of his late father, who inspired his love of the sea. Eoin was nominated for On-Screen Talent at the Wildscreen Film Festival, whose Panda Awards are regarded as the 'Oscars of natural history filmmaking.' Originally from Bantry, West Cork, and now based in Galway, Eoin is an avid free-diver and passionate about exploring and protecting the natural world. His travels have taken him to wild places from Botswana to Antarctica, reflecting his deep commitment to ecological responsibility.

Domenico is a natural history cinematographer from Kerry, renowned for his exceptional skill and artistry in wildlife filmmaking. He worked on Crossing the Line’s internationally acclaimed documentaries “Ireland’s Wild Islands” and “Wild Ireland”. In 2018, Domenico was honored with an IFTA (Irish Film & Television Academy) Award in the “Best Camera - TV” category for his outstanding cinematography on “Wild Ireland”. Domenico has also contributed to “Queens”, a Wildstar Films production for National Geographic, where he captured footage of bonobos, our close primate relatives, in the jungles of Congo. MOST RECENTLY, As an expert in high-speed cinematography, Domenico used the Phantom camera to capture footage of Siberian flying squirrels in japan for the BBC series MAMMALS.

How is that we have seen the destruction of nature as not only an unfortunate side effect of development but even a necessary prerequisite for maintain our economy? How can it be that we are seemingly oblivious to the fact that we are surrounded by collapsed ecosystems?

We have all the science we need in order to act on the climate and biodiversity emergency. We have signed up to enough laws and treaties that, if we were to act on them, we would be well on our way to restoring nature and decarbonising our economy. But one thing that has lagged far behind is our values. If we are to make the changes needed we will need an ethical revolution.

Ireland was once 80% temperate rainforest but today that figure stands at less than 2% and that is made up of tiny fragments which are widely scattered. Yet, the trees could come back. All we need to do is let them.

Can cities like Dublin be part of the solution to the ecological crisis? Can we throw the doors open to nature so that we have urban forests, wetlands and marine protected areas? Most of us live in cities and creating new connections with nature is central to healthier living and greater resilience in the face of climate breakdown.

The oceans around Ireland are vast and, not so long ago, they were bursting with fish and other sea life. Could a plan to create Ireland's first marine park, a conservation areas for sharks off the north coast of Donegal and Derry, also revive the coastal and island fishing communities that have suffered as a result of dwindling sea life?
