Presentation recorded at the first of three Iriss events on the topic of independent and inclusive living. It was held on 25 November 2021.

Robert Sanders, an Iriss Information Specialist talks through a rapid review of the published evidence on new models of care at home. 

The evidence search found that knowledge of what works well is limited in consistency and scope. It misses the perspectives of supported people and support workers, and reinforces the old moel of support based around care at home, rather than independent living.

Jane is the founder of the Centre for Learning and Performance Technologies is a well-regarded international speaker and writer on modern approaches to workplace learning.

Jane Hart talks through the different elements of building a Personal Learning Network - how to build a professional network as well as get a drip-feed of content through social media, blogs and web feeds. 
She also explains the importance of building social media into workflow, as well as constantly reviewing the process in order to ensure its value as a way for newly qualified social workers to continuously improve practice.

Sarah Cunningham-Burley is Professor of Medical and Family Sociology Public Health Sciences and Co-director of the Centre for Research on Families and Relationships at the University of Edinburgh. She is involved in a range of research, including the Growing Up Scotland cohort study and new qualitative longitudinal study of work and family life. She also conducts research on the social aspects of genetics and stem cell research and is a member of the UK government's Human Genetics Commission.

Colwyn Trevarthen, Professor (Emeritus) of Child Psychology and Psychobiology, University of Edinburgh.

He trained as a biologist, began infancy research at Harvard in 1967 and has published on brain development, infant communication and emotional health.

His current research concerns how rhythm and expressions of musicality in movement help communication with children and may help parents, teachers and therapists give care and companionship to young children.

He is a fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh and a vice-president of the British Association for Early Childhood Education.

Conference introduction. As part of a programme to foster better use of technology in the social services, Iriss, SSSC and the Learning Networks have organised a conference and exhibition on Friday 25 February 2011.

The conference offered a range of workshops aimed at demystifying the use and range of learning technologies. It also offered assistance in developing cost efficient and accessible solutions for the social services workforce.

Colleagues, friends and fellow activists I Have a Dream

Some say I rant, that  I am vexatious and am anti-establishment.

I should be delighted and even honoured to have these labels attached to me because I must be doing something right. I am touching nerves and have been doing so for the past sixteen years in relation to our most marginalised and discriminated against community in Scotland. And I will continue to do so for as long as there is life in me.

Bea Green, Kindertransportee said 'Social courage means taking responsibility not just for yourself in society, but also for others.' You will have heard of the Holocaust and of Holocaust Memorial Day which takes place each year on the 27 January. Themes in recent years which have inspired people to take action  have included "One Person can Make a Difference" (2006)" Stand up to hatred" (2009) "Speak Up, Speak Out" (2012) and "Don't Stand By" (2016) 

Martin Luther King Jnr. was one individual who put these in to action. I have a dream is perhaps his most famous speech but I have a dream too and much of it is expressed in another of Martin Luther King's speeches On White Moderates and Progressives “Letter from a Birmingham Jail," April 16, 1963. In it he says:

“I must make two honest confessions to you, my Christian and Jewish brothers. First, I must confess that over the past few years I have been gravely disappointed with the white moderate. I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro’s great stumbling block in his stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen’s Counciler or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate, who is more devoted to ‘order’ than to justice; who prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice; who constantly says: ‘I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I cannot agree with your methods of direct action’; who paternalistically believes he can set the timetable for another man’s freedom; who lives by a mythical concept of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait for a ‘more convenient season.’ Shallow understanding from people of good will is more frustrating than absolute misunderstanding from people of ill will. Lukewarm acceptance is much more bewildering than outright rejection.”

We should all have been aware of the discriminatory practices towards this community and their marginalisation. It has been going on for decades, even centuries! At the beginning of the 21 Century the Equal Opportunities Committee of the Scottish Parliament held an Inquiry in to this matter. and since then there have been further inquiries, strategies, reports, research, campaigns. We have had the United Nations, Council of Europe, Amnesty International, BEMIS, SHRC, the EHRC and many others actively involved. The questions that we must all ask of ourselves is why hasn't any meaningful action been taken by the Scottish Government and our  public bodies that would have impacted positively on this community?   Why have the regulatory bodies been so ineffective? What  have our professional bodies, researchers  and others being doing to ameliorate this most unacceptable situation? What action if any have you taken to address these discriminatory practices?

I have a dream and my dream is simple and that is that people like you here today will leave your comfort zone and work for  change and justice and not be content to allow what the Scottish Human Rights Commission called the last bastion of respectable racism to continue. Sleep well!

This story is based around role play sessions that are held between social work students at the University of Strathclyde and members of the service user and carer group. The role play is part of an exercise called Fitness to Practice, so students have to take part in a role play before they go out on placement (this is done with second year undergraduate students on the BA course as well as first year students on the Masters course). These sessions used to be carried out solely between students, but that didn't seem to be working, with it being much harder for students to imagine each other as service users and to use that experience to inform their future work.
