Iriy Frequencies on 20ft Radio

Bass music, a zeitgeist of contemporary electronic music, remains a true reflection of our times. With technical progress of sound systems, warehouse club culture, and the fusion of hip-hop and techno becoming the new "pop", it's at the forefront of music today. Yet, there's much more to explore. "Iriy Frequencies" hosted by @svzz_bm , is our attempt to remedey this situation in Ukraine and the global audience of @20ft_radio.

The series will explore various facets of bass music, including juke, flux house, post-club, and concepttronica. Our goal is to showcase sets that comprehensively represent the key players in this scene. We believe that labels are crucial actors in the industry, as they are like mini-cultures with their own ideologies, perspectives, technical specialties, and teams of musicians and technicians. Therefore, we will dedicate a separate episode to each label, treating them as individual entities.

For our premiere show, we chose to showcase the music of @hakunakulala, a Ugandan label known for their polyrhythmic and syncopated sound design. They are the largest independent electronic label in East Africa and a great inspiration for our musical direction. Hakuna Kulala faces similar challenges to the Ukrainian music culture, and they exemplify how a group of enlightened music professionals can overcome these issues.

Iriy Frequencies w/ geyera # 1: Hakuna Kulala

Tune into the heart of Mexico City, with the second episode of @iriyrecords show, featuring one of the most established and oldest post-club labels, @naafi

The label aims to overcome the self-doubt present in the local Mexican electronic music scene and revive the local musical aesthetic. Consequently, N.A.A.F.I. releases music inspired by local electronic music trends like dembow and reggaeton while recontextualizing Western styles such as techno and house. These sounds are fused to create a blend of deconstructed and often ironic music. This blend is termed “tribal,” contrasting with the music of malinchismo (the local name for structured Western genres). It combines percussive, conceptual, and polyrhythmic sounds to create a unique musical narrative.

Join us for the third episode of Iriy Frequencies, as we delve into the roots of modern bass music with a focus on two influential labels from the UK leftfield scene: Livity Sound and its experimental counterpart, Dnuos Ytivil. This episode is exclusively curated by Montronique, a resident of Livity Sound, who has prepared a selection showcasing the depth and diversity of the label's offerings.

Livity Sound, inspired by the Rastafarian concept of life-force, was established in 2011 by dubstep pioneer Peverelist. While rooted in UK Garage, the label has explored modern dub and fluxwork, shaping modern bass music genres and nurturing artists in traditional styles. Dnuos Ytivil, its darker twin, offers a collection of heavier, more experimental urban bass music.

IRIY.Frequencies w/ Monotronique: Livity Sound @ 20ft Radio - 22/03/2024

For the next episode of IRIY.Frequencies Geyera delves into the legacy of Skull Disco. This label, active from 2004 to 2008, produced ten releases, all supervised by its founders, Shackleton and Appleblim.

Skull Disco carved its niche in British dubstep, blending elements of dubstep, stoner metal, and dub techno. The label's sound was complemented by a post-Egyptian visual aesthetic, created by Zeke Clough.

Although the label existed for a relatively short time, it has had a strong influence on Iriy Records due to its dedication to sophisticated sound, its role in promoting ambient dubstep, and its narrative consistency. In its ten releases, Skull Disco followed a story with its own lyrical heroes and leitmotifs.

IRIY.frequencies w/ geyera: Skull Disco @ 20ft Radio - 03/05/2024

Founded by Tom Fraser in 2012, Coyote Records (@coyoterecordsuk) pioneered progressive grime music, often emphasizing the instrumental component. 

The label’s attention to beat-making craft and sophisticated arrangements brings its music close to being called grime IDM. Tracks produced by Coyote Records are hypnotic and ethereal, yet heavy and powerful, with vocals treated as equals among other musical elements. This unique juxtaposition can be heard in works by Shaun and Silk Road Assassins. 

Despite being an underground and independent label, Coyote Records has launched the careers of international stars like AJ Tracey and Tom E. Vercetti. They also organize events in Bristol and London’s The Alibi.

In this episode of IRIY.Frequencies we spotlight Wisdom Teeth (@wisdomteeth-uk), the groundbreaking London-based label founded by K-Lone and Facta.

The label emerged during the post-dubstep fallout when the London club scene was oversaturated with dubstep and Garage tracks, prompting crowds to shift towards more German-sounding techno. Wisdom Teeth was one of the first labels to merge classical UK sound's bass-heavy, broken rhythms with industrial techno. However, the label began incorporating more experimental and ambient sounds after a few releases, eventually becoming quintessentially left field.

Started by Lurka, Hodge, and Asusu in 2016, Timedance (@timedance) was born out of the UK Bristol scene, aiming to create mutated techno. However, now, almost a decade after its inception, it can be said that Timedance has created its own genre of music – flux house. The style combines the depth and weight of dubstep with dance-friendly rhythms of techno, while complex polyrhythmic layering of sounds gives ample space for experimentation, briskness, and freshness.

IRIY.frequencies w/ Geyera: Timedance @ 20ft Radio - 25/09/2024

A new episode of Iriy.frequencies is hosted by Veronicami, an Azerbaijani and Polish DJ deeply connected to the Kyiv scene. Known for her focus on deconstructed club and leftfield bass tracks, Veronicami will guide us through the textured and subversive sounds of Danse Noire. 

Danse Noire, founded in 2013 by Aisha Devi, Niels Wehrspann, Raphael Rodriguez, and Samuel Antoine, has a unique release strategy that strongly resonates with Iriy Records. The label promotes artists with small or virtually non-existent footprints in the industry, believing that this approach satisfies the modern audience’s desire for endless experimentation and discovery of boutique labels. It also brings Aisha Devi’s vision of the dancefloor as a collective ritual closer to reality. The label’s sound draws from industrial and psychedelic rock, resulting in dense, subversive, and singularly unique releases.

Started in 2011 by Jamie Russell, aka Low End Activist, Sneaker Social Club (@sneakersocialclub) is rooted in what he calls the ‘hardcore continuum’ - a term that captures the label’s breadth and spirit. 

SSC focuses on releasing progressive forms of drum and bass, juke, and post-UK garage, each track holding a distinctive sound that both hardcore fans and experimental listeners can enjoy. 

Often, the music is tinged with nostalgia, echoing the producers‘ memories of growing up in the city streets of the UK.

Join Luther, head of the Iriy label (@iriyrecords), as we trace the evolution of modern juke into the hard drum sound.  

Two groundbreaking labels shape this journey: B.YRSLF Division and Worldwide Unlimited. B.YRSLF, founded by Taoufik Allabouch (aka Daryll), was an international platform for fast bass music, with deep roots in juke, early grime, and experimental sounds (hosting early releases from artists like Ducky). The label, along with its sister imprint Widad, ceased operations in 2015 but left a lasting impact on the leftfield bass scene.  

Meanwhile, Worldwide Unlimited stands as a key force in hard drum’s rise. The label has introduced boundary-pushing artists like Nick Leon, Henzo, and BFTT, carving out a space for post-juke innovation.

Iryi.Frequencies w/ Luther @ 20ft Radio - 24/01/2025

This time Iriy.frequencies welcomes TRS (@taras_trs) and Bakunn (@bakunn), the heads behind the HUM (@hum-gul) formation, as they present a selection for their progenitor counterparts - Svbkvlt.

Svbkvlt is a modern legendary label hailing from Shanghai. It originated from a series of dubstep parties held at Shelter, a club that was a beacon for electronic music in China. The label was founded in 2013 by Gaz Williams and Blaise Deville.

The Shelter club and Svbkvlt invigorated a generation of Chinese producers by providing a space to create music with a local context rather than being built around expats and imported sounds. With a background in British dub music, Williams naturally infused bass sensitivities into Svbkvlt's curation. However, the label quickly became a hub for experimental musicians working across a wide spectrum of genres.

The label maintains close ties with collectives previously featured on Iriy.frequencies - NAAFI and Hakuna Kulala - further connecting underground scenes worldwide.

Wheel & Deal Records, founded by N-Type in 2009, it is one of the longest-running dubstep labels in the UK. Over the years, W&D has evolved alongside the genre, progressing from the foundational 2000s 2-step to the deep sub-bass sound of today. The label’s diverse roster of artists and styles allows it to span everything from party bangers and grimy brostep to deepstep and even deconstructed bass-heavy juke.

Iryi.Frequencies w/ Luther: Wheel & Deal @ 20ft Radio - 28/03/2025

Charlie Juarez organized Infinite Machine during his sabbatical in Montreal. Before that, he was often considered the face of the Mexican screamo scene. He moved away from the screamo aesthetic but retained the punk attitude of this music. From there, he learned about early dreaming technologies and the culture of SoundCloud music promotion. Thus, Infinite Machine became a spearhead label in the streaming music market.

While in Montreal, Charlie had a laissez-faire, or even chaotic, approach to producing and distributing music. Only after his return to Mexico City, which boasts an aggressive music dynamic, did he adopt a formal approach to music release. Here, Infinite Machine took shape with releases by Abyss X, Ziur, and Liar. These musicians transformed Infinite Machine into a powerhouse of experimental post-dubstep sounds. Furthermore, during this period, Ukrainian artist Art Was Taken has been releasing music here.

Over the past decade, Coyote Records has continued to evolve, fueling its unique vision of grime and percussive club music. With artists like OH91, Last Japan, and Beton Brut on the roster, the label has grown into a key player in the global grime scene.

Founded by Jen Hartley, known as Yushh, as a university project in 2019, Pressure Dome has quickly gained a loyal following. Its catalog features talented post-dubstep artists, including ophelia, Beatrice M., and Syz.

This time, Bakunn (@bakunn) dives into the catalogue of Ilian Tape - the iconic label founded in 2007 by Dario Zenker in Munich. This will be a unique edition of the show: the first time we explore a label that has evolved from deep techno roots into something far more hybrid and open-ended.

Early Ilian Tape releases were shaped by the dusty swing of boom-bap hip hop and dubstep influences - with A Tribe Called Quest and Digital Mystikz as key inspirations. Initially known for its minimal and loopy techno with groove, the label gradually shifted as a new wave of post-club producers joined the roster - including Skee Mask, Laksa, Etch, and dubstep heavyweight Commodo. Today, Ilian Tape stands as one of the most respected platforms bridging techno, bass, and experimental club music.
