The song "Sucre Amer" Azúcar Amargo,  denounces the inhumane working and living conditions of the workers in the sugar cane plantations, bateyes, in the Dominican Republic. It was recorded in 1994 in Montreal, Quebec.
This was a CD produced in four (4) languages, Haitian singer Émeline Michel in Creole and Québecquois singers Luc de la Rochelière in French and Karen Young in English. Four voices, four languages, four rhythms that sing of pain, isolation, four artists who got united by HOPE.
The lyrics to the song are from Haitian writer Vincent Potel, and the music by Haïtian composer Stanley Péan both living in Montreal. The CD was released by the Québec Committee for the Québécois pour la Reconnaissance des Droits des Travailleurs Haïtians en République Dominicaine inc. led by Pérard Joséph, Haitian union leader based in Montréal. The CD sales financed agricultural cooperative projects, seamstress workshops and the consolidation of the Haitian-Dominican workers union in the bateyes.

Irka Mateo is a global citizen, singer-songwriter, and Grammy Foundation supported folk music researcher. She traveled for ten years (1997-2007) in the rural areas of the Dominican Republic documenting more than thirteen genres of folk musical traditions — unknown in the wider Dominican culture and beyond and creating a Dominican folk music archive.  During this time she introduced the accordion into the Dominican/Latin alternative scene, brought to light the ‘Comarca,’ a wholly unknown genre outside of the countryside, and was the first woman to play traditional percussion in urban settings. From 1985 to 1996 she was one of the pioneers of the Dominican alternative music with Irka &Tadeu and Irka con Bohuti, renowned groups and essential reference of Dominican alternative music.

Currently, she writes “Mestizo Music,” Accordion and guitar-lead songs inspired by the indigenous/ Afro/ European folk traditions of her native country, as well as the wider Caribbean and Latin America. Her artistic endeavor expands the boundaries of Dominican music while building bridges to Latin America, the Caribbean, Africa, and the United States. Irka is also a lyricist who writes poetic lyrics to tell the stories of the Dominican people and those of other cultures, delivering songs of love and life. Her current album “Vamo a Goza” is an example of her style. It’s an album that fills the room with joy, dance, and musical enchantment.
