Cassiopeia was the queen of Aethiopia. Cassiopeia was the wife of King Cepheus of Aethiopia and mother of Princess Andromeda. Cepheus and Cassiopeia were placed next to each other among the stars, along with Andromeda. She was placed in the sky as a punishment after enraging Poseidon with the boast that her daughter Andromeda was more beautiful than the Nereids or, alternatively, that she herself was more beautiful than the sea nymphs. She was forced to wheel around the North Celestial Pole on her throne, spending half of her time clinging to it so she does not fall off, and Poseidon decreed that Andromeda should be bound to a rock as prey for the monster Cetus. Andromeda was then rescued by the hero Perseus, whom she later married. Cassiopeia has been variously portrayed throughout her history as a constellation. In Persia, she was drawn by al-Sufi as a queen holding a staff with a crescent moon in her right hand, wearing a crown, as well as a two-humped camel. In France, she was portrayed as having a marble throne and a palm leaf in her left hand, holding her robe in her right hand. Dan Bay is a man of love and he’s paying his respects to Cassiopeia. This is his first offering for Shango Records. These three tracks can give the beauty of the stars and the gorgeous palm of the moonlight.

Following his collaboration with Nicolas Jaar's Clown & Sunset label, Cruz has self-produced and self-recorded this landmark album. 

‘Prender el Alma’ is a new strain of Latin American music Cruz calls ‘Andes Step’. Influenced by new digital technology, blended with local influence, Cruz builds his tracks layer by layer, instrument by instrument, drum by drum, exploring local indigenous and Afro-cosmologies in a modern setting. 

From atmospheric opener ‘Sanacion’, the 10-track album journeys through short, sharp acoustic guitar riffs on ‘Puente Roto’ and the percussive ‘La Mirada’, to the electronic ‘Prender el Alma’. Down-beat ‘Equinoccio’ gets a vocal kick from Ecuadorian singer Huaira, ending with the blissful, lo-fi ‘Cocha Runa’ featuring Tanya Sanchez. ‘Prender el Alma’ ebbs and flows through a range of production of local sounds, feeling like a digital awakening.

This digital revolution is spreading through Latin America like wildfire, and nowhere is this more exciting than in the heart of the continent's bustling music scene, where Nicola Cruz is leading the way. 

Led by forward-thinking young producers and musicians, Ecuador is beginning to experience its own digital folklore revolution.  A new crop of producers and musicians are using homeland traditions and rhythms to build on a vibrant history of visual and sonic art, catapulting them into the 21st century.

ZZK are at the forefront of this burgeoning music scene. With artists such as Frikstailers, La Yegros, El Remolon and Chancha Via Circuito, they are defining a new and exciting Latin American music culture.

"Traveling Blues" - Broken Open

"This is an age old story, of a man once a boy..."

On February 14th, David Block aka The Human Experience opened his heart to the world as he released his 6th full length album (collaborations and EPs excluded). The album, titled "Broken Open," examines the depths of the most difficult of human emotions, the "age old story," love. "Broken Open," like love, is complex and wrought with all that comes with falling in love, being in love, letting go of love, and (most importantly) loving oneself. The 13-song album immerses the listener in sadness, joy, compassion, bliss, peace, and all of the other beautiful feelings that come with experiencing what it is to love and to be loved.

The title track, "Broken Open," showcases Block's talent for blending electronic compositions with organic sounds featuring heartbreaking vocals and a piano that makes you feel like you're in a smoky jazz club which transition nicely into the scat-like snaps in "Traveling Blues," and a trombone (played by Mal Webb) that makes you feel at turns excited and lonely.

When asked about the album, Block said, "The songs explore the full spectrum of love; Birthing from innocence to heartbreak to love in the other to breaking free to finding love in oneself" - from highs that make you feel as though you're "Walking on the Moon," to heart wrenching lows as love "Slips Away."

True to form, Block showcases his talents while embracing the strengths in others. The album has many incredible collaborations, with tracks featuring The Grouch, Quixotic, Leah Song (Rising Appalachia) and more.

Block has built a diverse fan base from countries around the world and played events ranging from Burning Man, Boom, Coachella, Electric Forest, Wakarusa, Lightning in a Bottle, Sonic Bloom, Symbiosis, and Envision to name a few. David has shared the stage with artists such as Thievery Corporation, Bonobo, Tipper, Emancipator, and many more.

While Block's sultry beats and cohesive sound have always been seductive, "Broken Open" brings a brazen vulnerability that comes with maturity. More than just sharing emotion with the listener, Block provides something more - something new. "Broken Open" goes out on a stylistic limb which is both innovative and refreshing.

"It is different, and I'm embracing that it's great to be different sometimes," says Block.
 
The album serves as the debut album for the "Slow Down" label.

Fernweh (literally "farsickness"- "an ache for the distance", longing for a place that you have never been). It is a existential longing for something that one knows is there and yet cannot find. It is the urge to journey to a new place...in relationships, in reality and within. 

The breath taking landscapes of New Zealand are at times beautiful and warm and at other times rugged and immensely powerful. They are a reflection of the intense emotional landscapes within us.

Chimes, a co-creation with Biomigrant, is a pure live co-creation together. On this sunny day Biomigrant began to sing the colors of his various travels. Using different instruments we co-created flowing with the present moment and setting the foundation for him to take it from there with his special production touch.

Juntos (Spanish for together), the debut album from ALUNA, is a testament to a new paradigm of music. It is a collaborative project through and through. Pulling from the indigenous traditions and fusing their experiences with the sounds of the moment, ALUNA has landed something timeless. Steffen Ki and Maywa have joined forces with some of their favorite musicians, bringing us a masterfully crafted collection of music that expands beyond borders, cultures, and genres. 

Much of the influence for this album comes from Maywa’s time spent living in the rainforests of South America and Steffen Ki’s own journey into nature through his travels around the world. ALUNA was born out of a love affair between these two beautiful beings and so it is fitting that they extended their embrace to some of their closest friends and producers in the creation of this collaborative work. 

All the songs from this album are derived from music written by Maywa. Just one song, Agua de Flores, is an adaptation of a traditional ceremony song. Maywa’s voice is the common thread weaving all 8 tracks together into a seamless story of love, peace, and connection to nature. 

The first seeds of this album were planted 2 years ago, exactly the time of the first vision of this label Resueño. It is with great joy that the album and the label circle back around to meet each other once again. The beauty that manifests when we come together to support each other and to create as a family is also a testament to the new paradigm which is upon us. This is a call to come together, Juntos.

Populous, aka Andrea Mangia, DJ and producer hailing from Lecce, in Southern Italy, is excited to announce his new album “W,” due out May 22nd with tastemaker imprint Wonderwheel Recordings. The new album “W," for women, is Populous’ tribute to free and diverse feminine musical imagery. Inspired by women who sing, write, compose and play and for Populous are both icons and friends, hai from Italy, Japan, Argentina, Brazil and Mexico. “W” is also a celebration of femininity beyond stereotypes, less defined by gender rather a common uniqueness that is the perfect response to the uniformity imposed by the machismo still reigning in the music industry. With the new album, Populous has opened up about his queer identity, making his first queer-identifying musical statement. From songs to artwork, he has created a visual manifesto to present feminine musical imagery. The artwork was conceived together with Nicola Napoli (a digital artist in Berlin’s queer scene) it is, in Populous’ own words, the representation of “a utopian party we would have done anything to be invited to.” An eclectic crossover party, improbable yet coherent, where you’d meet Grace Jones and Missy Elliott, Loredana Bertè and RuPaul, Aaliyha and Amanda Lear, Beth Ditto and Divine while dancing to shamanic house, digital cumbia, vogue beat and glitch electronica. Populous is accompanied on each track by the independent artists he admires most: Sobrenadar, Kaleema, Sotomayor, Emmanuelle, Barda, Weste, Cuushe and the Italian M¥SS KETA, L I M, Matilde Davoli and Lucia Manca. Collaborations born of discovering one’s sexual freedom, from perpetual motion, from constant traveling, physical and musical. With a background in musicology, Populous is known for his global approach to music-making. He has always been interested in disparate genres and styles of music, which is reflected in the output from the Populous project and its focus on Latin American sounds as refracted through a European lens. In 2003, Mangia made his first jaunt into the music world with the album ‘Quipo’ (via Morr Music), followed by ‘Queue For Love’ in 2005. Influenced by his reggae/hip-hop-infused surroundings (Lecce is known as Italy’s Jamaica, as reggae and dancehall are extremely popular there) he released ‘Drawn in Basic’ in 2008, which was well received by international critics, earning him a spot on the global dance music map. The 2010s have seen Mangia refine the Populous sound with albums like ‘Night Safari’ (Bad Panda Records) and ‘Azulejos’ (Wonderwheel Recordings), while also expanding his role as a sound designer for fashion houses such as Gucci, Vivienne Westwood, Isabel Marant, and Elie Saab, among others. ‘W’ releases on Wonderwheel Recordings May 22nd.
