Shostakovich String Quartet No. 7 First Mvmt

I’ve written a fair number of works for choir in the past, but most of them have had some element of humour as a focus for the composition. I decided I wanted to write a choral piece that focused on vowel sounds, space, harmony, and Canadian identity. Using the national motto, A Mari Usque Ad Mare, I wrote a piece that explores techniques I hadn’t explored before. After one complete statement of the motto for each province and territory, the English and French translations of the motto are then sung together. For years, I have been trying to explore the concept of Canadian identity in music, without creating either jingoistic or kitschy music. A Mari Usque Ad Mare was the recipient of the 2017 SOCAN Godfrey Ridout Young Composer Award.

Elegy For The Wandering Albatross

Nocturne(for Orchestra)

"Drawing From Memory" was written as a tongue-in-cheek love letter to stringed instruments and the string quartet. The title is itself a play on words, as the piece is made up of short sketches on musical material that I have played in my past. The core musical principal at play is quotation, drawing material from the first book of the Suzuki violin method, Kreutzer etudes 2 & 11, and a song from Gilbert & Sullivan’s Pirates of Penzance. The quotations are initially obscured, gradually becoming more obvious as the piece unfolds.

Drawing From Memory

This work is not a setting of a particular poem, but more a setting of how one might read a poem. "Poem" begins with two ideas, the first motif containing five pitch-classes, and the second motif containing the complementary seven pitch-classes. These two motifs go through a series of rhapsodic variations until finally returning to where we began.

The title of “Mystical Visions and Cosmic Vibrations” comes from a line in Allen Ginsberg’s poem, America. This piece is not an interpretation of the Ginsberg poem, but rather my thoughts about how “Mystical Visions” and “Cosmic Vibrations” would be experienced as music.

When faced with the task of writing for unaccompanied tuba, I was drawn to the instrument’s lyrical quality, and as such decided to use pre-existing vocal material as the basis for this piece. This work draws its inspiration and source material from the Elvis Costello & Burt Bacharach song, “Toledo”. Having lived Toledo-adjacent for nearly two years, this song is almost always on my mind. “Dream of that Spanish
Citadel” has a berceuse-like quality, and as the material drifts further into “sleep”, the music becomes more active and rhapsodic before relaxing and repeating. Different aspects of the song are recalled and alluded to in each episode of this piece’s “dreams”, until the song is most obviously remembered (but still somewhat obscured) at the end of the piece.
