I have recently become obsessed with fragments and nonlinear growth, both in and out of music. Drawings that extend beyond the frame, ‘shadow pieces’ that begin after the last measure of a work, and the branching growth and communication of mycelium all were on my mind while composing this piece. 'Not buried, but just under the surface' is complete in itself yet remains a fragment. The abstract and the unspoken hint at more beyond themselves.
This piece was composed for Garden Unit, and shares its name with a painting by Caroline Kent.

The Five Musketeers comprise outstanding international musicians on the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment Peter and Ann Law Experience Scheme. United by a common passion to create whimsical yet intimate musical dialogues, in this recital they will present a varied repertoire of 19th century chamber music for winds on original historical instruments.

Danzi: Wind Quintet, Op. 56 No. 2 - 2nd Movement

Hailing from New Zealand, Isaac is a London-based hornist; specialising in historical and contemporary performance. Regarded as one of his generation’s leading exponents on period horn playing and an ‘era-defining’ musician, his work takes him around the globe; exploring repertoire and instruments from early 18th Century through to the present day.
