mono no aware (もののあわれ) is the first compilation to be released on PAN, collating unreleased ambient tracks from both new and existing PAN artists.

Featuring Jeff Witscher, Helm, TCF, Yves Tumor, M.E.S.H., Pan Daijing, HVAD, Kareem Lotfy, ADR, Mya Gomez, Sky H1, James K, Oli XL, Bill Kouligas, Flora Yin-Wong, Malibu, and AYYA, the compilation moves through more traditional notions of what is called ’ambient’, to incorporating wider variations that fall under the term.

“Mono no aware”, ‘the pathos of things’, also translates as “an empathy toward things", or "a sensitivity to ephemera”. A term for the awareness of impermanence, or the transience of things. A meditation on mortality and life's transience, ephemerality heightens the appreciation of beauty and sensitivity to their passing. In investigating the passing of time, the boundaries between memory and hallucination become blurred; between fiction and reality. The movement of time transforms into an eternal present.

The album is mastered and cut by Rashad Becker at D&M, featuring photography by Molly Matalon and design by Bill Kouligas. A limited version of 100 copies will be released as a special art edition in collaboration with Mount Analog for the LA Art Book Fair 2017, before going on general release.

Berlin-based events organisers and label Creamcake are pleased to announce their latest online release, Iku’s Body Horror EP (released August 3) with lead single “À Tes Yeux” out July 19.

The Frankfurt-based musician and visual artist dropped her first album Fugue: Some Temporal Patterns Other Than the Forward March on Prague’s Genot Center last year. Also known as Johanna Odersky, Iku’s music production complements the Städelschule student’s sculptural work, exploring the silhouettes separating internal and external worlds and the mechanisms of inclusion, exclusion and domestication they reveal. Seeing the material and the immaterial as being entangled, her interest in how forms structure and give meaning to physical space is also reflected sonically.

In Body Horror, she uses associative sampling, often densely layered and interwoven as a play between clarity and blurriness. “À Tes Yeux”, in particular, carries on this gentle metaphor of vision and visibility with a title that translates to “To Your Eyes”. Its French lyrics are foregrounded in a mix of half-articulated piano progressions and an incomplete guitar sample that swirls suspended in a milieu of synth elements set adrift. Going back and forth between clear and failing perception, Iku’s music reflects the delicate line between the familiar and the uncanny.

The “À Tes Yeux” single release precedes the Body Horror EP, which will be released in full on August 3. There will be a launch party and NextGen showcase at Berlin’s OHM club — also featuring Cecilia live, CYPHR, Dis Fig and Flagalova — on August 9.
