The idea for this piece came to me as I was leaving my parents house after Christmas. I thought about how sweet my memories of that house were. I reflected on all the wonderful people in my life, both near and far. When I arrived back home, I began to improvise this piece, which aims to capture the feeling of saying goodbye to a loved one. This piece doesn't dwell on sadness, instead it focus on the wonderful memories that come to mind as you leave.

Ashes is a piece written for clarinet quartet, based on the children's nursery rhyme "Ring Around the Rosies" which is often associated with the bubonic plague.
