Scotia Birdsey aka Scotia is an Upstate NY-based DJ with an active presence in queer nightlife in the Hudson Valley and Capital Region of New York. She returned to dance music and DJing in 2022 after a decade of dormancy, previously hosting the Capital Region party Outpost1, where she booked producers like MikeQ and Doctor Jeep at the initial blooming of their careers. Those two names are appropriate reference points to describe one of her typical sets - cunty and spacious. She has spent the majority of 2022 starting from the beginning once more, DJing any and all opportunities available to her – playing nearly 100 parties for the year, and along the way becoming a co-resident of the Hudson-based Community Rave Network.

Notes on the Mix ///
"I made this mix reflecting on the emotional rollercoaster of 2022 - this was my first year DJing in clubs in ten years, and also my first year being single and dating as a trans girl. I hope that the selection and timing of the toons here can express some of that to others, but also that the awe-inspiring talent of the producers can shine properly! Of course like any mix I do, I couldn't help but indulge in including a few closing sweet treats of nostalgia, like the queer club producer Bamabounce's 2007 Baltimore incantation of Minnie Riperton's Lovin' You! I also am compelled to say that the first portion of this mix feels a bit inspired by the work of fellow XOXA mix creator Sister Zo, whose production and DJing, amongst others, has really helped me rediscover my love for more expressively percussive dance music. I was so totally taken by the Bass and Funky sounds when I witnessed them bloom in the 2010s, and discovering her work this year was the catalyst I needed to bring me back to those sounds."
