After contributing an excellent 10” to Church’s white label series last year, Ishmael returns to the London imprint with his debut long player, a varied set showcasing the full range of the producer’s versatility. The multi-instrumentalist's trademark swinging house cuts rub shoulders with immersive techno bangers and chilling ambient pieces as he draws out the contrast between heart pounding moments of dancefloor euphoria and the chemically depleted paranoia which follows. Intriguing and expressive, "Sometime In Space" sees the young producer pushing boundaries and challenging himself to experiment with new styles and techniques - with remarkable success. Samples bed in perfectly with well crafted synth tones and ambient washes, while dextrous piano and headnodding basslines move in and out of focus throughout the LP, tying the whole set together into one cohesive journey.

“The Chapel” starts as a glimmer on the horizon, yet develops to a war cry, a clarion call of grace and impact. Cosmic synth gurgles fill the initially sparse atmosphere, before being subsumed by overlapping sax lines; by the end, only a ghostly imprint of squall lingers in the air. On the flip, “Full Circle” brings us down from the sky to the earth. Busy, clipped drums are encircled by synthetic flurries, culminating in a climatic release. As a whole, the release keeps these two divergent approaches to jazzwise electronica rotating in tandem. It’s an approach that is due to be explored with more collaborators on later instalments.

The deep sea monster lived in a cavern a thousand miles beneath the surface of the waves. Nothing but blackness could be seen amongst the murky depths except for it's wicked white eyes burning through the black and its fins cutting through the water like a knife. It moved through the water with such grace and elegance, it's presence so strikingly terrifying yet beautiful. From time to time legend would tell of it rising to sea level to bask in the light of the moon but who knew whether that were myth, fantasy or dream.

Multi-instrumentalist & producer Ishmael stepped onto the scene in December 2012 with his first single for Wolf Music, 'Want You'. Since then a string of releases on Wolf and Church have further helped him further in his young career. Ishmael's latest work is his first LP, called 'Sometime In Space', set to release on the 26th of February on Church. Making its debut here is the excellent 'That Piano Track'.

Premiere: Ishmael Ensemble - Song For Knotty

Live instrumentation and dance music are often disassociated, perhaps this is because we have become accustomed to the sight of laptops, buttons and machinery. However, that is not to say that there aren't people producing electronic music with instruments in this day and age, no, far from it in fact. 

Ishmael is a producer most commonly known for his take on house music having released on labels such as Wolf Music, Church and Deso. However, most recently he has taken a sidestep away from the typical narrative of a dance music producer, hooking up with instrumentalists to create what he has titled the Ishmael Ensemble. "Songs For Knotty" is the first release to emerge from the project and has just been released on Banoffee Pies Records. The project sees more of a focus towards jazz and abstract electronics than club built sounds, a twist in a musical career which shows great promise. Ahead of his appearance at Farmfestival alongside the Ensemble we caught up with him for a chat as he contributes to our mix series...

‘Tunnels’ begins with a flurry of drums before being enveloped by sub-bass pressure, like stepping directly into a basement club in full flow. As the track climaxes, saxophones sweep the air like green-spoked lasers overhead, creating a contrast of pinpoint clarity against the background atmosphere. Though sonically well outside Bristol’s dubstep legacy, it accurately portrays the smudged perception of a peak time rave. On the flip, we find the more introverted 'First Light', wherein the group downshift from the buzz of a bustling room to the hum of one’s head as dawn breaks. It is a moment of spacious solitude shared only, as Cunningham pictures it, with “swans fighting over polystyrene chip boxes” in the canal below.
