This past year has been pretty awesome for me, I played shows in Golden, Fernie, Lethbridge, Medicine Hat, and Calgary, I played three summer festivals, took a Beatdrop course on Turntablism, started participating in Scratcher Meetups, and I'm getting my fingers deeper into production of my own music. I feel so much energy from myself, my friends and this music scene to keep going with this, and that it can only develop further this year. So here's to what this year might bring:

This is the first episode of the Sampler Café Podcast and it features music produced and performed live at the Sampler Café 3 Year Anniversary Jam. 

For those unfamiliar with Sampler Café, we are a community-based collective of musicians, beatmakers and producers. Sampler Café currently focuses on hosting open electronic music jam sessions in a variety of formats and in many cities across Canada. We are expanding our platform to include music education programming, a more robust framework of jam sessions across the globe, artist development and performance initiatives and much more. 

This is the first of many podcast episodes which will include interviews, unreleased and exclusive music content, discussions around gear/production techniques, sample challenges and more as we move forward.

This is honestly the first time we have collaborated. I met Case of the Mondays (COTM) while they were playing in Vancouver and asked them if they wanted to work on a track together… it didn’t even seem like they thought about it when they instantly said… of course , NEXT QUESTION!

Today I’m so excited to share with you a mix by an amazing selector who doesn’t get nearly enough recognition as she deserves. Every time I’ve seen her play or listened to one of her sets, I always find myself smiling and asking for track IDs.   

I asked her to describe her mix and here’s what she had to say: “Ok. To me the mix was a journey through the jungle at night, after drinking plant medicine. Coming across all the random medicine men, aliens, dancers, psychedelic toads ect. Sometimes scary.”

STAFF MEAL - JAPAN

this is the second part in a series of house mixes meant to capture the grooves, sounds, and moods of the first underground dance parties that took place at the first inclusive underground dance clubs, as well as all the history that club culture was born of. i'm admittedly obsessed. queer and coloured in southside chicago in the late 70s, a new club opened up called the warehouse, which would become the namesake for a genre of music that would continue to evolve and change the world for decades. something of a religious experience, it's impossible to understand the magical potential of a soulful 4/4 groove without really experiencing house music, but this mix series attempts to scratch the surface.

Isis Graham
Notoriously resilient and endlessly innovative, Esette (aka Isis Graham) has carved out a lasting legacy in Western Canada’s electronic music scene. With over two decades of experience, her unrelenting work ethic has made her a leading figure both behind the decks and behind the scenes, shaping cultural staples like The Alberta Electronic Music Conference, Girls on Decks, Substation Recordings, and Versions Patio Parties.

Graham’s roots in Calgary’s underground rave scene date back to 1998, where she witnessed the peak of renegade parties. By 1999, she transitioned into DJing, and after local bylaws led to the end of raves, she adapted by bringing her sound to some of Western Canada’s most iconic venues over the past 20 years. Her sets have graced stages at renowned clubs like the Embassy, Cherry Lounge, HIFI Club, Habitat Living Sound, and Open Studios as well as celebrated festivals like Bass Coast, WMC, Decibel, Think! Festival, and Shambhala.

In 2003, Graham co-founded Girls on Decks, a collective that was dedicated to amplifying the visibility of female and non-binary DJs in the dance music scene. While the initiative is no longer active, its impact on Calgary’s music community is undeniable, with its influence continuing to resonate today. 

Since 2007, Graham has built an impressive catalogue as a producer, with releases on Supremus Music, O*rs, Substation Recordings, RF, gaining support from top-tier artists like Maceo Plex, Fred Everything, Seth Troxler, and Jamie Jones. From 2013 to 2018, she served as A&R for the Calgary-based Substation Recordings, further nurturing local talent. She also co-founded Studio Social, Calgary’s first producer-focused listening event series, which fostered collaboration and community among music creators.

In 2016, Graham co-launched the Alberta Electronic Music Conference, a boutique gathering of electronic music masterminds that ran annually at Calgary’s National Music Centre until 2019. The conference featured 60+ panels, workshops, and mentorship opportunities for emerging artists. Recognized for her entrepreneurial spirit, she received Avenue Magazine’s "Top 40 Under 40" award in 2019. Additionally, her weekly summer residency "Versions" at Modern Love (formerly Broken City) has become a key event for community building, nurturing emerging talent and fostering Calgary’s house
music scene, celebrating its 11th season in 2024.

Esette’s passion for launching boundary-breaking initiatives extends to her identity as a performer. Ever-evolving and always effervescent, her multifaceted approach and raw passion shine through her work—continuing to inspire and energize those fortunate enough to experience her sound.
