Jamin-I comes through with a vinyl selection for NiceUp Aotearoa. 

Starting out collecting 7" records from Jamaica after living in the Caribbean for work, Jamin-I's passion  for bass culture and conscious messages has extended to many genres over the years.

Residing in Raglan, Jamin-I is the brains behind the notorious Raglan Sunday Sessions, which has been running for over a decade. He has hosted many reggae legends like Mungos Hi Fi, Mad Professor, DJ Vadim, YT, Charlie P, Soom T and Jstar to name a few.

Vinyl Culture - Raglan is his latest project, providing a platform for vinyl collectors to play their music, share passion and connect. In honour of this, he was more than happy to put together a selection of vinyl for the occasion.

From vintage to present, classics to rare, Jamin-I's selections are about the message and good vibes.

Pour cette rentrée 2016, c'est Robin qui se charge du mix dub. Collaborateur régulier de Musical Echoes, il a aussi rejoint le Zaïdub sound system il y a un an. Here at Scotch Bonnet Records we love Reggae music's rich heritage. Not only is it is as strong today as it ever has been, soundsystem culture has now spread to every corner of the world. To celebrate this we have compiled a few musically important releases from some of the key musicians and producers that have influenced and nourished Scotch Bonnet records since the start. Knowing where to start was hard, but we have grappled with the slippery beast of personal taste and settled on tracks that we can all proudly stand behind. We are presenting the International Reggae Day Mix for Marley Natural. We are planning to do more live performances and music together. Currently, DJ Residency at Lovers Rock, created a reggae party called SELECTIONS, SELECTIONS. As well, I am working on a series of photos called RAS, I for a book and photo exhibition.

My first exposure to reggae was through my father and it is the first form of music that I learned about as a youth. I selected and mixed an array of reggae artists, I truly enjoyed listening to since I was a youth which ranges from my father, Augustus Pablo production and Rockers International Artists such as Delroy Williams and Jacob Miller.

It's my pleasure to introduce this mix for International Reggae Day with my brother, Addis Pablo for Marley Natural. My heart lives in reggae and it truly inspires me in everything I do in my life from my music productions, art and performance. Reggae gives life to things that may be melancholy. My experiences in reggae music was through my mother and father, Augustus Pablo. I was immersed in roots reggae, ska, lovers rock, dub, sometimes dancehall when a classic made it to America.

"In 1972 I was 16 years old, and although I was still at school I had two paper rounds and a Saturday job which provided money for going out, clothes, and most importantly, records.

While all but a couple of friends had unceremoniously ditched reggae as their music of choice I had already made the step up from buying UK releases on Trojan and Pama’s labels to buying ‘pre-release’, 7” 45 rpm records that were freshly imported from Jamaica. The latest sounds with wildly exotic label designs or mysterious, rubber stamped white labels.

Sometimes these tunes would take months to be released over here, and now and again there would be a record which didn’t get released at all, adding to the value – and the exclusivity – of the copy I was lucky enough to own.

We all have our own ideas about ‘the best year for reggae’, and of course it’s very subjective, but I’ve always looked back and seen 1972 as a very special year, not just because it was an important part of my youth, but also for the sheer quality of the music. Reggae was changing, the deejays were becoming even more prominent, the lyrics were getting more socially conscious and exhilarating dub mixes were starting to take over from the rather plain B-side ‘versions’. This was the sound of the future!"
