A piece I wrote for a production I did with my friends of The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde. This was for the fight scene between Dorian Gray and James Vane.

A piece of music inspired by Basil Hallward from The Picture of Dorian Gray.

The piece begins in a key of Eb major, a key that supposedly is the key of love, of devotion, of intimate conversation with God. If Lord Henry is the devil’s advocate, then Basil Hallward is God’s. He is forever a romantic optimist who sincerely believes in the natural humanity of mankind. In truth, he is a decent and honest man living in a deceptive world.

The music bumbles along with Basil’s ideals, steady and sure, with a sweet melody obscuring the darkening bass line underneath. Basil has unyielding faith in pure values such as goodness, honesty and truth; but while Dorian continues to have a smooth exterior, he is corrupting inside as Basil continues to have faith in his beauty. The bass line subtly changes, becoming faster and more confused until the key of G minor finally prevails.

G minor is a key representative of discontent and unease. Basil doesn’t realise that those he idealises as his supposed friends, Henry and Dorian, could possibly be bad people. The music slows, and Basil experiences the realisation that Dorian has drifted away from him. He pleads with Dorian, but Basil ends up paying the ultimate price for his good faith – his life.
