Badge employs an eclectic cast of characters from the Toronto underground music scene, whose combined experience would take pages to spell out. It includes stints accompanying songwriters Andy Shauf and Marker Starling, outfitting heavies Blood Ceremony and Biblical, and respective careers spent gigging Django-jazz and the classical cannon. Badge’s distinctive sound arises from the diversity of these musical exploits, creating a palpable chemistry well captured on the live-tracked songs that form the group’s self-titled debut.

Part of this crucial chemistry can be attributed to the fact that four of the six players in the Ensemble have been at the core of the live, U.S. Girls band, a group that has scorched stages internationally over the past year and was hailed by Paste magazine as the best live band of 2018. Since 2015, when Turnbull released his final record as Slim Twig for DFA, he has largely concentrated his efforts as a producer and writer on the U.S. Girls project, together with making contributions to the theatrical rock outfit, Darlene Shrugg and the psychedelic jazz-funk collective, The Cosmic Range. Badge’s set of songs is yet another 180-degree turn for an increasingly collective-minded bandleader, who is singularly disdainful of any genre orthodoxy.

“Bound Together” is the first track from Scott Hardware since 2016’s “Mutate Repeat Infinity”, which finds the avant-pop artist combining acoustic instrumentation with deep electronic flourishes.
On “Bound Together” Hardware continues his quest to find the limit of what can be called “electronic music”. Dusty pianos and heavy drums rub up against digital squeaks and squeals to dazzling effect, all anchored by a naked vocal performance.

Recorded live off the floor with Toronto scene heavy-hitters Carlyn Bezic (Ice Cream) and Simone Tisshaw-Baril (Highest Order, Tropics, Partner) as rhythm section, “Bound Together” feels warm and alive - and is brought into another realm by the haunted backup-vocals of Deidre Nox.

Lyrically, the song follows the thought process of someone having been cut off from communication from a loved one. The song follows it’s narrator through embarrassment, to desperation to at last, resignation. At the song’s crescendo we hear Hardware justifying the mania: “[there’s] a million reasons why I need to hear my baby tell me,” and then as if having given up: “he’s having the time of his life.”

The ambient sounds here were collected in a tunnel in Arthur's Pass, an airport in Vancouver and an island called Gili Trawangan. Somehow, they were all in the right key despite being recorded as much as 6 months apart. They seem to fit together quite nicely.
