This episode of Island Time I'm excited to present a mix from @djBushbby, bringing us a beautiful hour of selections that feel perfect for this late May weather. 

Bushbby is a London based British-Colombian DJ who explores the roots and rhythms of Latin American music. They are heavily inspired by the sounds of the Caribbean and the sound systems she grew up around in both Barranquilla, Colombia and the UK’s underground. 

For this special Island Time mix she takes a trip to the Caribbean Sea and visits the beaches of Colombia, Venezuela, Panama & Guadeloupe. On her stop off in Colombia she picks up a few West African records, namely from Congo and Nigeria who’s music has had a huge influence on Colombian music since the 60’s.

For our latest Island Time episode, we introduce French-born & Berlin-based Boris Paillard a.k.a. @djmixanthrope, who has been shaking up dancefloors from Canada to Ghana since 2015 with african, afro-diasporic and afro-caribbean songs & sounds. After working for Akwaaba Music in Accra, he started the monthly event series “African Beats & Pieces” in Berlin in 2017, inviting passionate DJs and underground live acts to explore specific musical themes.

This mix focuses on the music made & sung by women on the continent, whose powerful voices are too seldom heard. It features many hidden gems found during sleepless clicking nights on YouTube, one of Mixanthrope’s favourite digital digging grounds.

They are the co-host of @yallayeehaw a party featuring Arab pop, Bhangra, & other Southwest Asian, North African & South Asian sounds and the host of Spicy Trax, a bi-weekly radio show for @playgroundradio

Island Time Radio: Mix 38 with DJ Cardamami

This week on Island Time brings back another offering from @AnalogDakarClub , a collective of DJ's passionate about analogue African popular music - vinyl records and tapes - which has been organizing parties in the Senegalese capital for two years.

The mix is a journey from the West Indies to West Africa, back and forth, A mix of rhythms and cultures where it's hard to say who inspired who. The African influences in the West Indies music is obvious but we also found a lot of Caribbean patterns inspired songs all over West African artists. And we added some rare and outstanding 7" just dug.

Island Time Radio  Mix 40 With Analog Dakar Club

This episode is a little different from our normal program - an extended version of the mix streamed last week during the Sphere Radio collaborative Cultural Affairs program.

One of the goals of the Island Time show on Sphere Radio was to find new ways to tell stories of migratory culture through music. Our specific focus has been on the shared musical space between Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean. On this brief episode, we present a selection of music dedicated to the cult-figure of Yemọja/Iemanjá/Yemayá , the Yoruba orisha of the surface of the ocean, who through the atrocity of the Trans-Atlantic slave trade came to the new world through the enslaved peoples of the Caribbean, South America, southern Untied States, and more, maintaining status and power even as she shape-shifted to fit Catholicism and other impositions.

Her story, or rather stories, speak to a type of power that is mysterious and beautiful, here relayed through musicians playing in genres ranging from Nigerian juju, salsa boricua, afro-cuban jazz and beyond. It is also worth mentioning that two songs included in this selection are dedicated to Mami Wata, a similar feminine water deity from West Africa, who shares much in common with Yemayá. While not originating out of Yoruba religion, she offers an expanded context that I think is valuable in recognizing.

Originally a water color, this digital rendering of Yemayá is based on several Yoruba practices from West Africa to the Caribbean and South America. Her crown is made of the leaves of the yagrumo plant, one of the plants used in her rituals, and the attire is based on the Virgen de Regla, who is often used to synchronize Yemayá's image. The image represents the colors and icons attributed to Yemayá: turquoise and red, along with the moon, boat helm and cowry shells. Since she controls the seas and oceans, we depict her controlling the fate of two ships: a drowning schooner Clotida to the right, the last ship to transport enslaved Africans to the United States and on the left a contemporary ship of East African privateers. Yemayá is depicted guiding the ship of privateers who carry poor people trying to survive, while sinking the ship on the right after it made its last voyage, with it ending the painful transportation of enslaved people. Instead of depicting a clear humanly figure, we chose to portray her as a body of water; full of movement and force. This watercolor was created by the visual artist José Ortiz-Pagan for Colectiva Clara, a collective of candle makers, herbal concotionists and dreamers, of which he is a member.

Island Time Radio: Mix 41 - Bolivian Rock, Psych, Soul

This episode brings us @ritmotropical, collector and DJ, focusing on Lusophonic music from Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde, Mozambique, Guinea-Bissau and São Tomé and Príncipe. 

This mix is a journey to the islands of São Tome and Príncipe, giving insights into the unique rhythms of one of the smallest countries in Africa. The former Portuguese colony was once known for being one of the world’s largest cocoa producers. During the colonial regime music played a crucial role in the resistance against the colonial oppressors and in favor of movements towards independence. Influenced by numerous styles of music like Angolan Semba, Cape Verdian Coladeira and Funaná, Congolese Rumba, West African Soukous or Highlife as well as sounds of the Caribbean, a vibrant music scene emerged on the archipelago. Local Bands like Conjunto Mindelo or Os Úntuès and later Sangazuza and África Negra united these different genres with typical rhythms of São Tomé and Príncipe creating a unique sound. Thanks to those bands, genres like Socopé or Puxa - which were often sung in local dialects such as Santomé Creole – envolved.

From the origin of colonialism's appalling impositions, through independence movements and into modern day democratic transition, we just barely dig into this musical landscape, and provide a selection that speaks to the power of the Surinamese people. On this episode we welcome back beloved guest @analogdakarclub for an all Cameroonian affair. Here is his words on the mix:

A musical journey on Cameroonian soil is anything but a straight line. Like the roads of this immense and impenetrable country, we deviated, turned back, sometimes we got bogged down while digging in our vinyl records. We have re-discovered treasures of Bikutsi rhythms (traditional dance relating to the Beti ethnic group) and Makossa (an exclusive component of the Douala culture), arranged in soukous sauce, with more bass and brass, West Indian influences (Jacob Desvarieux was
there) and funky (props goes to Aladji Touré the so intense bass player) marrying the rhythms of Mangembeu (It's a traditional Bamileke dance). Cameroon is a musical continent to which this mixpays tribute by touching on its incredible musical richness.

I conceived this mix as a trip troughout Africa, or actually through some parts of her, who is for me the mother of all parties, like a sacred rainbow.
I like to see the different sonorities reverberating in the body. Each rhythm, each quality, resonating in our dances, waking them up. And to let each one act and open up the way to the infinite forms of celebration.
I like allowing it to happen, and I would like to invite you.

This edition proposes a festive trip through the vast latitudes that unite the territory of Brazil, a sort of Africa in America. Here we can hear tons of ritual percussion brought to dancefloor and traditional songs mixed with urban genres in a constant dialogue between the countryside and the city. There are songs from all eras with special focus on funk, disco, samba and MPB. Many versions are new edits made by producers who are currently revisiting old sounds from a modern perspective, improving even the original ones.

Aquí podemos oír toneladas de percusión ritual llevada a la pista de baile y canciones tradicionales mezcladas con géneros urbanos en un constante dillogo entre el campo y la ciudad. Hay temas de todas las épocas con especial foco sobre funk, disco, samba y MPB. Island Time Radio: Mix 07 with Abuaf

This episode of Island Time takes us for a short trip away from the tropical zone up into the UK to explore the genre of Bhangra, a folk-fusion music originating within the Punjabi diaspora. Specifically looking at a period in the late 80s/early-mid 90s when Punjabi musicians were intersecting with the underground club culture in the UK, which was already a melting pot of various immigrant and urban movements. Taking strands from downtempo hip-hop, the Caribbean sounds of Reggae/Dancehall, Jungle, Acid, House and anything else that was swirling around this time, Bhangra became cemented as a sound that drew from so much yet gave respect to the its musicians through a firm foundation in tradition. This mix aims to put together songs that span some of these genres and are some of my favorites of this era. 

Side note - I put this one together during a beach vacation, so I hope the sunny environment of its creation comes through!

Island Time Radio: Mix 08

A special episode of all Cabo Verde music coming to us via Paris, France through the DJ, collector and travelling soundsystem captain @rckhmlegroove.  Here's his words on today’s episode:

The mix focuses on Cabo Verde music and spans from the early 70’s to the 00’s. It is composed as a journey within a wide range of typical genres from the island, like coladera, morna, or funana, but also pop, reggae and funk.
It started smoothly but escalate step by step to fast paced track, some of which are tested and approved on the dancefloor.. For those who can keep up with the pace!

Rackham Le Groove is a DJ from Paris, who is part of various music collectives. He also curates the youtube channel Back for More.
In parallel, he drives a van sound system (www.instagram.com/rackham_le_groove/) that go countryside and festivals in France to spread the good music.
His focuses mainly on African, Caribbean and South American music, from the old gems he found digging during his trips to the more recent music to create a varied atmosphere of warm groove.

Island Time Radio: Mix 16 with Lady Z

This episode of Island Time comes from yours truly, bringing an hour of all griot music from the Sahel region of West Africa, showcasing a variety of takes on the ancient tradition, with an emphasis on stripped down and laid back arrangements. Made to guide into an oasis of calm (though there are some harrowing and haunting vocals here) through these cold and challenging days of early November. 

As a personal side, I had already planned on putting this mix together, when I was exposed to Covid and forced into a challenging quarantine situation that has left me somewhat exhausted. Listening through these artists, and playing these songs back over and over the last week has been a bit of a blessing for myself. With the current craziness, especially surrounding our presidential election here in the states, I find a lot of people close to me also sharing in this exhaustion. I hope this can help some of you to relax, and of course act as a minuscule contribution in combatting the closed off worldview that seems to have taken hold over here.
