After nearly a decade of producing music as SQL, Pim van Horssen’s often turbulent but exciting journey both across the world and deep inside himself has led to a crossroads. The idea of quitting or starting over was something that crossed his mind many times; but after moments of despair he always managed to rediscover his love of music on some dancefloor somewhere, reuniting his passion and leading to this year’s long-awaited release of his debut album, the eponymously entitled SEQUEL.

“Sequel is about rebirth. It’s the culmination of everything I have loved, lost, learned and experienced in the last 10 years as a musician,” he says. “This cycle is the only constant factor in my music and my career, and by learning to accept it, I've come to terms with the music I make. This album is a reflection of who I am right now at this moment. It’s me, no compromise.” 

Embracing a fresh approach that combines the use of numerous pieces of analogue gear and recording his own samples in the field, the album represents the new sound of SQL in its purest form.
“I used to make more minimalistic techno and very computer-based music, but in the last few years I’ve found a more crafty, collage way of writing music.

“Most of the tracks on the album started out as jams. I put down about 50 jams last year and collected all the raw, recorded material, which I then used as a library of sounds to make the album.
“Some of the tracks on the album are a collage of three or more of those original jams.”
The end result is something truly special - a diverse and immersive album that channels the raw emotion and experience of the man behind it.

The mind is a constant theme throughout, from the opening track Metanoia, about what it is like to rebuild the mind after a mental breakdown; to the deeply personal Melancholia, dedicated to two friends lost to suicide; or the space-age ambience of the closing tune, Sound Mental State. 
But fear not, there is plenty of light too including the playful Meraki, the acid groove of 11th Hour, the minimalistic weirdness of Immersion and the warm groove of Petrichor.

‘Blazer’ is the twenty-third release of Aftertech Records and the second release on the label for the talented Matt Dwellers. He is the first on the label to release a second EP with us. In order to celebrate this occasion, we invited the great remixers Bessiff and Nick Devon to do their magic. The minimalistic and deep sound of Matt combined with Bessiff’s hypnotic vibes and the power of Nick Devon, this has become a very diverse EP in which everyone can find something they like for sure!

Matt Dwellers shows his immense talent once again with the title track Blazer. Right from the start, he manages to get you in a wonderful trance. Quickly a vocal arises which only strengthens this vibe. Once the smooth bassline comes in the dream is complete. Halfway he plays with a light waving pluck which drifts along with the beat. All together this track has such a unique vibe that it is hard to be captured in words and just has to be heard.

In Mirage he shows the more spacy side of his music. As is his signature sound, Matt has cleverly placed percs and uplifting special effects. A strong and mesmerizing bassline lays the groundwork for upbeat shakers and airy synths. This is a track in which you will lose yourself completely from beginning to end. A must listen!

The first remix on this EP is by Bessiff. He reworked Blazer into something more powerful. A growling bassline works in perfect harmony with a hypnotizing arpeggio which leads to a wonderful build up. In the breakdown everything is slowly taken away to make room for a light and soft synth. And then suddenly, in one explosion everything comes back together. A remix very well done!

Nick Devon did things totally different and turned Blazer upside down. This track tells a story in several chapters. It starts out with an ominous arpeggio backed up with all kinds of small clashes and percs. This leads to a strong beat and an echoing melody growing more and more in power up until the break comes in. When it is almost quiet he introduces an even stronger melody to bring it all back with one last bang!

A wonderful EP by even greater artists. This is a must have for sure!

"Djuma Soundsystem is also a successful solo artist who boasts a back catalogue including music signed to many imprints such as Parquet, Rebirth, Crosstown Rebels, Tenampa, and My Favorite Robot Records.

Western has previously made numerous appearances on Sol Selectas working alongside Uone, and also signed other tracks to labels such as KATERMUKKE and Stil Vor Talent.

Complementing the two originals are three remixes from Sobek, Fake Mood and Kincaid, who each bring their own individual flavour to the EP. Black Coffee has been heavily supporting the Sobek remix during his summer residency in Ibiza. 

The original tracks on the EP were inspired by a safari trip in South Africa. With the bird sounds in the first track, “Saguaro” made in collaboration with Westerby represents the jungle atmosphere created by the vibrant selection of wildlife, and the tribal chants pay homage to the aboriginal natives. The spritely melodies full of intrigue are symbolic of the wide eyed enchanted stairs from excited Western eyes looking upon beautiful foreign landscapes.

Sobek reworks “Saguaro” for the second track on the EP and keeping the main lead synth intact he uses the other parts from the original to construct a new backing track. Refined and stripped back, this alternate version uses the chants more as a distant texture instead of a prominent feature. He also adds dramatic strings to create a sense of progression that builds towards a very impactful breakdown.

Track three “Kawahagi” made in collaboration with Western is representative of the South Aftrican weather with tribal drums being the pitter-patter of rain, and leads to the drama of the breakdowns ominous bassline that looms like an overcasting storm cloud. Starting off light and breezy then moving towards the darker more intense ending, this dramatic cut changes like the extreme weather conditions in the South African countryside.

Fake Mood provides the fourth track with their remix of “Kawahagi” using a more uptempo groove and clear focus on sequenced percussion in comparison to the live percussion loop of the original. Adding their own melody part, the vibe of this remix is uplifting with a dance floor focused structure that’s got an epic pad sound to further heighten the atmosphere.

Finishing the EP is Sol Selectas home grown talent Kincaid, who takes a very distinctive approach to his remix focusing of the chants and percussion of the original, but not without the addition of his own ethereal pads and quirky acid line. Using FX to create some unusual textures, his tech-inspired remix for some will no doubt be the highlight of the release."

Exclusive Skatman 'Meraki (Ivory's Pychedelic Rework)'

After four catalogue numbers Aziz Haddad alias Skatman releases his first EP  on the label he founded in 2016, Scatcity. 'Back In The Zukunft', how Skatman's debut EP is called, consists out of three original tracks and a remix of 'Meraki' by one of the scene's aspiring artist, namely Daniel Tagliaferri, who's better known under his Ivory-moniker. Having released on Kompakt, Sol Eterno and delivering Scatcity's previous EP, 'Mindfullness', which was strongly supported by a wide-range of music-connoisseurs and made it into the record bags of Red Axes, Dixon and Ame. Daniel's approach on 'Meraki' features, as the working title already suggests, a psychedelic touch the intro points out subtly in the reams of detailed and apparent deep and multi-dimensional soundscapes. After two minutes and eight seconds 'Meraki' is literally added a 'punchline' with the bass line's introduction, which simultaneously supports the twirling and swirling synths and retain the tension throughout the track.

Skatman's EP 'Back In The Zukunft' will be released October 26th, 2018 on Scatcity.

German Brigante, the DJ and Producer from Malaga, is an artist who has already made its mark in his own right on the international scene, not only for his performances but also for pieces like this new single called 'Marimba', edited in Manitox.

What better place to capture the identity of one than on his own label? This question is what we can guess what German Brigante thought when he make the decision of editing 'Marimba' in Manitox, his own label that reaches the tenth reference with this work.

Regarding to the title, tooken from one of the most characteristic African instruments, the producer gives us a clue about who will carry the weight of the track in this composition that touches the emotional and epic in equal parts and we can see all the maturity of the artist through the melody of a marimba.

The producer, heavily influenced by electro music, has chosen for this track a palette of sounds related to this genre. We can see this essence attending to those long pads, a synthesized bassline and the arpeggios. All of this synthetic elements are running smoothly  to the hook created with the organic element as it’s the case of the African xylophone.

A reference that is being supported and played by artists of the stature of Solomun or Dixon in their sets and that will be available on the main platforms from December 17th.

Lebanese newcomer Veles makes his debut on Steyoyoke Black with ‘The Elysian Fields’, a 4-track EP featuring two original tracks, and two remixes by Steyoyoke favourites Darko Milosevic and Erly Tepshi. 

The first track ‘The Elysian Fields’ blends elements of traditional techno with pared-back, cinematic sections that build incredible tension. It is a powerful opening that uses minimal elements to show confidence and control. ‘Broken Promises’ follows, taking the EP in a heavier direction – where the first track was more detail-focused, Veles adds more layers and melodic elements to build up the intensity.

The third track is Erly Tepshi’s remix of ‘Broken Promises’, which takes the intensity of the original and gives the track a harsher and more abrasive side. The melodic elements of the original are paired with sharp layers of percussion, giving the track a distinct urgency. The EP closes with a remix of ‘The Elysian Fields’ by Darko Milosevic. Where the original begins with a delicate intro that draws on the more ethereal side of techno, this remix starts high energy with a thundering bass line that continues throughout. Darko Milosevic maintains the tension of the original track, whilst adding more percussive and melancholic elements to give it a darker feel and stronger sense of movement.  

It is an EP that takes a listener on a distinct journey, with each track and remix adding something to what has gone before. It is an impressive collaboration between Steyoyoke Black artists, and a great start for Veles.
