As the first katharsis release of 2022, we present you the debut EP “Distance” by  Rome-based artist chantssss. This release frames a deep introspection for the listener by exhibiting a granular sound collage based mainly on aquatic sounds but also on solid objects broken up to tiny pieces until they transform into a liquid semi-percussive state. 

Throughout the four tracks of the EP, we are enveloped by a transforming layer of fluid noise, that momentarily resembles the slithering of a snake, which is also graphicly represented by the artist alias. This is no coincidence, as the artist is connected to this theme by their experience of being bitten by a viper while capturing aquatic field recordings in the mountains.

On “Distance”, chantssss premieres his artistic expression by employing intertwining multi-sensory atmospheres of nature combined with generative synthesis and field recordings. The single “Your Next Online Healing” will be premiered on the 3rd of February, a week before the full EP releases on February 10th.

Thursday, January 23rd, ISSUE is pleased to present Just The Right Height, the solo music project of interdisciplinary artist Keke Hunt, and Drumloop, the recent moniker of artist and musician Daffy Scanlan, each presenting new solo work. Both artists chart critical new contexts at the intersection of fragmented narrative, sound design, pop music, song, and experimental composition.

Daffy Scanlan’s work has long drawn on the lines between electronic and organic sonics. Composing climatic melodies scaled up to expansive, affecting vistas, Scanlan combines heavily processed vocals and poetic storytelling -- exploring fragmented collage and pop stylings in equal measure. A skilled pianist as a child, she worked between analog gear and Fruity Loops throughout her youth, releasing harsh noise and power electronics on a string of labels. But it was after her suitcase was stolen in 2017, containing almost all of her music equipment that Scanlan dove deep into FL Studio, turning a trying moment into an opportunity for deep sonic exploration of the software. The result were compositions with extensive nuance, accents, and details all flecked with digital detritus and swirling waves of echo -- hovering between emotional meltdown and resilience. In 2018, Scanlan released her debut album Revenge Body as Drumloop via Sweat Equity. She continues to self-release tracks through SoundCloud.

Daffy Scanlan is an artist from New Jersey, who is currently based in New York City. Her work explores the transportation of objects / language through time and space, channeling their degeneration and disembodiment. She combines cracked and broken textures with dinged color stories, creating portals into a canon of abuse and trauma. Her compositions resemble cornucopias of disintegrating figures, like glowing bunches of archaic characters. She believes disappearing is equal to omnipresence.

For the second episode of Carrier Bag Music, Elysia Crampton Chuquima responds to the concept, image and process of the medicine bundle — a collection of sacred items with spiritual significance, held in a special carrier, in Indigenous American cultures. Spanning over seventeen years of the artist’s life, this episode comprises original music and edits by the artist and includes the premiere of a previously unreleased track ‘Stars Over Riparian Corridor’ and features music released under the artist’s Jaqi name, Chuquimamani-Condori — the name given to her as a form of honour and recognition from the elders of her nation.
