Towards the end of the year, I tend to look back and reflect . No wonder this turned out somewhat moody. But there is also a send of calmness and peace. I hope you can find that too.

The track is a bit unusual for me I think. I've played with granular synthesis on the drums. Maybe that's already shaping the sound quite a bit. As usual all sounds are build from scratch. Let me  know in the comments what you think.

For its fourth release, Harry Agius aka Midland's Graded label has signed its first new act in the form of Montreal-based Solitary Dancer. With ‘Desire & Apathy’ being instantly familiar to anyone who heard Midland's Essential Mix earlier this year— in which it subsequently proved to be a much asked about inclusion— this eponymously titled release marks the debut of Solitary Dancer, as well as Agius' second time stepping into the role of label A&R following Hubie Davidson's appearance on Graded's ‘Regraded' sub-label last year.

From the opening moments of the EP's title track it is apparent why Aguis welcomed this release to the label, with 'Desire & Apathy' highlighting Solitary Dancer's similarly shared talent for elegant, richly-sculpted sound design and a knack for propulsive club rhythms that eschew rigid 4x4 drum patterns. 'Desire & Apathy' takes a classic electro beat and through the use of elegaic pad washes and swells of sinister bass notes morphs it into persistently engaging shapes. 

The B-side's 'Paradise Found' is a suspenseful coralling of intriguing sonic elements, with its fractured beats combined with a cinematic sense of drama and melancholy that's brought to the fore on the beatless 'Rapture Version' which brings Solitary Dancer's first release to an impressive close.

‘Descend’, the new work of modificatory project Lovozero, encapsulates Anastasia Tolchneva’s sound setting of cross-disciplinary performance of the same name, passed during the first TKANI session in Mutabor, Moscow's most spectacular underground music venue. By the guidance of Anastasia, Maria Kharitonova and Anna Kravchenko performers tried to reverberate the processes of genesis, growth and dissolution of various structures in human body during the event. The capture of inevitable fluidity was the main aim of the whole act; the reaching of urgent kinæsthetic freedom that creates a proper possibility for reversing of linkage between impulse and motion.

And apart from industrial multileveled interior of Mutabor and various objects of complex nature (silicon, concrete, aluminum) within it and the dancers’ bodies floating in their presence, it was Lovozero’s sound had been calibrating the sentiment right and righteously. (A)synchronous and (a)symmetric pulses, muted murmuring and lowercase crackles were the same parts of derived (un)certainity, as inclusive presence of spectators and strain of happened movements did. Now this splash of noise and tune is accessible for everybody – and everybody could test his own knuckles and fibers in the same measure that occurred that evening.

“Time becomes plastic. Your experience of time morphs................And when you come out of it, on the strong days right before the next scheduled infusion, all of that time compresses into blurry waves of noise.” Xeni Jardin

Time is defined by and within the human experience yet the dominance of ‘linear’ time prevails. We are inextricably linked with time, ‘Life’ is measured in time.

Depending on particular situations our experience of time can be elusive, appear stretched, accelerated, and on occasions all too specifically in synch with defined parameters. Audio recordings, film, Internet, and photography are some of the means by which we choose to mark ‘times’. Such documentary methods signify our need to externalise particular events and also to activate memories.

‘Bioschismic’ is created solely from audio and photographic documentation of Xeni’s time spent receiving chemotherapy. The repetitive drip drip rhythm of the toxic chemicals measured in precise doses over a specific period of time provide the prospect of extending (life) time. Time is the dominant force yet the effects of the drugs change the experience of time to a space that is other worldly - a different time zone - a schism within and for life itself.
