For its fourth release, Harry Agius aka Midland's Graded label has signed its first new act in the form of Montreal-based Solitary Dancer. With ‘Desire & Apathy’ being instantly familiar to anyone who heard Midland's Essential Mix earlier this year— in which it subsequently proved to be a much asked about inclusion— this eponymously titled release marks the debut of Solitary Dancer, as well as Agius' second time stepping into the role of label A&R following Hubie Davidson's appearance on Graded's ‘Regraded' sub-label last year.

From the opening moments of the EP's title track it is apparent why Aguis welcomed this release to the label, with 'Desire & Apathy' highlighting Solitary Dancer's similarly shared talent for elegant, richly-sculpted sound design and a knack for propulsive club rhythms that eschew rigid 4x4 drum patterns. 'Desire & Apathy' takes a classic electro beat and through the use of elegaic pad washes and swells of sinister bass notes morphs it into persistently engaging shapes. 

The B-side's 'Paradise Found' is a suspenseful coralling of intriguing sonic elements, with its fractured beats combined with a cinematic sense of drama and melancholy that's brought to the fore on the beatless 'Rapture Version' which brings Solitary Dancer's first release to an impressive close.

In early 2019, after thousands of applicants and months of careful deliberation, Arts Council England, NTS Radio and Carhartt WIP announced the artists who have made it through to the first year of NTS WIP artist development program: AZADI.mp3 and Lucinda Chua, both from London, Contour from Charleston, USA, Crystallmess from Paris, Toronto’s LA Timpa, Lecx Stacy from San Diego, Manchester-based Aya and London based DJ re:ni. To introduce their work and vision, Carhartt WIP asked them to conduct a mix that showcasess their recent musical output. Only re:ni, who isn’t a producer, is not part of the show. To introduce her skills as a DJ, Carhartt WIP asked her to prepare a mix that represents her way of storytelling as a DJ, which will be broadcast separately two weeks from now. DOMA in Russian means “at home”. For the last two months, my home has been a small city close to the Atlantic Ocean named Saint-Gilles-Croix-De-Vie. I am there, luckily, surrounded by so many soundscapes: new birds, different noises of waves, thunderstorms, and hundreds of seagulls. I'm spending so much time observing seagulls’ life here, how they are making nests on our roof, flying against the wind, catching fish on the waves. I was recording flute with open windows so you can hear all those Atlantic noises. First track it’s a flute singing to seagulls, then seagulls to midi and midi to flute chain. Some of the tracks sound like soundscapes or cycles which you can loop. It’s like a daily routine of moments that I have started to appreciate more and more during this lockdown, finding surprises inside myself without a mirror.
