Ep. 2117 Livin' The Dolce Vita With Jeff Porter: Pt. 8 | On The Road With Stevie Kim

Welcome to Episode 2118 of the Italian Wine Podcast. Today Giulia Stocchetti Interviews Niko Kanellopoulos with his stepson Guglielmo Giordano. Today’s episode is a special one brought to you in both Italian and English. It is a call to action for the Next Generation of winemakers and enthusiasts to start their career in the industry so that they can continue generations of winemaking similar to Niko and Guglielmo. 

More about today’s guests:
Niko was born in Greece on November 30, 1950. He lived with his family on a small island where his Grandfather made wine until he was 21 years old. After Greece he decided to move to Italy and based his life in Napoli. In 1990 he became sick and after much research the doctors discovered it was due to sulphites. This situation pushed him to plant his first vines in Mirabella Eclano (Avellino) tò produce natural wine without sulphates. In 2003 he bought a farm in Taurasi with an old vineyard of 800 vines where he planted an additional 1,600 vines. He produced a natural Aglianico di Taurasi for 20 years, resting the wine for 7/8 years before drinking. In 2022 Niko was diagnosed with brain cancer and was no longer able to take care of his farm and continue his passion in winemaking.

The Tenuta degli Angeli agricultural company was founded in 1984 in the locality of S.Stefano degli Angeli in Carobbio degli Angeli: a "favor" vineyard as Pierangelo Testa, creator of this small and wonderful oasis, had defined it. The 350 meters of altitude, the soil composed of calcareous marl and clay, an ideal microclimate for wine production and careful care are the filters from which constant wines full of territoriality emerge, the pride of the Testa family, who, harvest after harvest, they renew the challenge that lies silent in this small strip of land. Added to this is that unmistakable feminine touch and attention to detail that Mrs. Manuela and her daughters have been able to instill in every corner of the company.
Today on the elite hill there is a "bonbonniere" vineyard: small in size and full of promises, kept harvest after harvest. The plants, chosen according to the characteristics of the soil, climate and microclimate; the appropriate breeding methodology and the suffrage of the Grand Designer who only signs the best, have made Pierangelo's dream come true, changing the hobby into a convinced passion. Passed on with equal fervor to the kind, dynamic wife Mrs. Manuela, to her daughters Laura, Roberta and Maria and Francesco, the only son.

About the session:
This session explores the importance of a chef’s relationship with wine, through the eyes of professionals in the restaurant sector as well as consumers. Is it necessary for a great chef to also be well educated in wine? Should chefs and sommeliers work together to create menus, or is the food the chef’s primary focus and the wine should be left to the somms and the consumers? Based upon the results of a survey conducted earlier this year, we reveal the opinions of a wide variety of wine professionals, discussing everything from how do diners choose a restaurant and is the wine list important to that choice, all the way to how extensive and diverse restaurant wine lists should be.

About the hosts:
Born in Verona in 1959, Andrea Sartori represents the fourth generation of owners of Casa Vinicola Sartori, the winery founded in 1898 by Pietro Sartori. After high school, he moved and lived in the United States, where he completed his studies and had his first employment experience. When he moved back to Italy, he started taking care of the Commercial and Communications departments of Casa Vinicola Sartori, focusing at first on the domestic market, and later on foreign ones. Since 2000, he has been the President of Casa Vinicola Sartori. Besides taking care of the commercial aspects of the company, he is also in charge of the strategic vision of the business.

Gurvinder Bhatia is the Editor-in-Chief and Publisher of Quench Magazine - North America’s longest-running and Canada’s most widely distributed wine and food publication. Although he has written for Quench for over two decades and been on the editorial team for the past 15 years, Gurvinder purchased the magazine in 2021 and is committed to the magazine’s evolution to be a much truer representation of our society. Gurvinder is also the wine columnist for Global Television Edmonton, an international wine judge and the president of Vinomania Consulting.
