Episode 580 Monty Waldin Interviews Pierpaolo Guerra 

Pierpaolo Guerra is the Export Manager at Tenuta di Capezzana. In this interview he shares some of the fantastic history and wines this Winery has to offer. 

The Family at Tenuta di Capezzana
In the twenties, Count Alessandro Contini Bonacossi with his wife Vittoria bought the property of Capezzana, then enlarged with the purchase by the Marquis Aman Niccolini, of two neighboring farms, “Il Poggetto” and “Trefiano”. Thus was born the Tenuta di Capezzana, divided into 3 farms and more than 120 farms, dedicated to the production of high quality wine and oil. Alessandro's passion for collecting led him to preserve bottles, so that today Capezzana can boast a collection of historic vintages starting from 1925. In 1945, Augusto Alessandro, son of Alessandro, was joined by his son Ugo, a veteran of the war and a graduate in agriculture, which gradually took over the management of the estate, transforming it from a sharecropping management to a modern company. Ugo, a man of other times but with broad views, he exploited the enthusiasm and passion of his children, leaving each of them to run a business. A perfect combination between Ugo's experience and the novelty of the fourth generation. The first of the children to work alongside their father was Vittorio, who at the age of eighteen took charge of the all-round management of the company, eventually becoming the manager of the campaign and the winemaker, devoting himself particularly to the transformation towards organic. Today Capezzana is managed by a collaboration between the fourth and fifth generation. Beatrice is the sales manager, flanked by her sister Benedetta, the winemaker, and her brother Filippo, who is responsible for the production of oil and the financial part. The fifth generation has already begun to follow the family tradition, and today they work in the company Serena, responsible for hospitality,
The History:
In Carmignano the vine was already cultivated in the pre-Roman era, about 3000 years ago, as demonstrated by the wine jars and tasting cups found in the Etruscan tombs. A parchment dated 804 was found in the state archive of Florence: it is a rental contract that documents how olive trees and vines were cultivated in Capezzana 1200 years ago for the production of oil and wine.
In the early Renaissance, a woman, Monna Nera Bonaccorsi, built the first “casa da Signori” and nine farm houses with the relative vine-growing systems; it was 1475. Other generations and families took turns on the property of the estate: the Cantucci, related to the Medici, and the Bourbon del Monte Marquises. In the eighteenth century a married Cantucci Bourbon enlarged the farm and bought new farms; he also introduced an exemplary administrative method, the documents of which are still preserved today in the company's historical archive.
After the Bourbon del Monte, the company passed to the Adimari Morelli and then to the Franchetti Rothschilds and, by the widow Sara de Rothschild, and then to the Contini Bonacossi, our family, in 1920.

Werner Waldboth, is head of sales and marketing at the Abbazia di Novacella which is one of the oldest wineries in Italy. The monastery was founded in 1142 and since then they have been producing wine. Abbazia di Novacella is still an active monastery as well and the combination of these two facts makes it quite unique. The winery is located in Valle Isarco, one of the northernmost wine regions in Italy. The wines are characterized by their origin: fresh, fruity with a crispy acidity.

About today’s guest: 

Dietrich Ceolan comes from a winemaking family and he set out working in his own winery in 2016. Ansitz Tenuta CEO, in Salurn, Alto Adige. He originally graduated in Agriculture in 2009, then he conquered a Bachelor in agriculture and oenology in 2011. During the following couple years he travelled the world learning about other wine making techniques, this included going as far as Australia! But home was calling and when he came home he put all his experience, education and family tradition to take over from his father. His father did not stray far however, he concentrated on his hobby, making speck! Now if you visit the winery and taste some wine, you will also be able to nibble on some homemade speck and cheese.

About today’s winery:
Gravner winery is located in Friuli Venezia Giulia. The vineyards of the domaine curl over the hills passing seamlessly across the border of Italy into the slopes of Slovenia.  Meticulously maintained, the rows of grapevines settle into terraces that are dotted throughout with trees and bodies of water designed to attract wildlife and assure biodiversity.  Gravner is steadily replanting to assure the primacy of the autochthonous grape varieties of Ribolla and Pignolo.  After determining that stainless steel was not a proper marriage for his wines in the 1990s, Josko Gravner decided to follow the ancient wine-producing techniques used in the Caucasus and has began fermenting his wines in huge amphorae buried in the ground in his cellars in 2001, with a full conversion for all wines as of 2004.  The whites, which make up about 85% of the estate’s production, spend about 10 months total in amphorae, with the reds a shorter 1 to 2 months.  He insists on aging his wines in large barrels for many years so release dates for most wines are from 7 to 10 years and more from the date of harvest.

The Buglioni family are grape farmers the Valpolicella’s – started in the early 90s out of the courage and foresight of Alfredo Buglioni and later his son Mariano who chose to devote himself to winemaking and becoming one of the most important producers in the Valpolicella.
Starting from their first 3.5 hectares of vineyard purchased with the house where the family still lives today, the two "Teste Dure" grow their own grapes on 50 hectares of vineyards in the Valpolicella Classica and 5 hectares in Lugana, these have been organically run since 2019.
A strong passion leads Alfredo and Mariano Buglioni to produce distinctive and elegant wines with native Valpolicella grapes alongside some more unusual and almost forgotten ones to highlight the authentic character of the territory.

These wines express an individuality also sold in 5 experience places in Verona and Valpolicella, where different cuisines enhance each label. You can try typical “cicchetti” in Osteria del Bugiardo, grilled meat in Locanda Buglioni or at Ciccia Bistrot and seafood in Piscaria. Buglioni has also designed spaces to enjoy a relaxing break among his vineyards and olive trees in the Dimora or visitors can stay within the city of Verona at one of their apartments.

Bentu Luna is a project focused on regenerating century old bush-trained vines ranging from between 35-115 year of age, planted to an area known as the Mandrolisai and Barigadu, based in the centre of Sardegna in the province of Oristano and Nuoro.  
Bentu Luna is the name of the estate which is situated in Neonelli and is the brain child of Gabriele Moratti (owner of Castello di Cigognola estate in Oltrepò Pavese). It is managed by CEO Gian Matteo Baldi.  Its story is not just one of regenerating vineyards. Beyond that, it also looks to the tradition of community and viticulture in rural Sardegna.  A tradition in which each family becomes a stakeholder in the communal vineyard.  This 1200-hectare vineyard project is planted to a mix of indigenous varieties that include percentages of Bovale sardo, Cannonau, Monica, Pascale, Cagnulari, Carignano, Vermentino and Barbera. This random mix of indigenous varieties represented a ‘freedom of choice’,

About today’s guest:
Born in 1985 in Marsala from a family dedicated to winemaking, Pietro Russo graduated in viticulture and winemaking in Conegliano Veneto and got a Masters degree in Bordeaux. His career has included working in Bordeaux and Languedoc, Andalusia, New Zealand and Piedmont, where he developed his winemaking skills and an insatiable passion for wine. Pietro now works for Donnafugata as of 2010, where he has the chance to produce wines from the most compelling appellations across Sicily such as Etna, Pantelleria, Vittoria and Contessa Entellina. In 2020 he revised the Italian chapter for the New Sotheby’s Wine Encyclopedia together with Gabriele Gorelli MW and Andrea Lonardi, and he takes part in several international wine competitions as a judge.
In the meantime, Pietro is busy with the Master of Wine program, having passed the tasting part of the exam in 2019 his studies continue, trying achieve those coveted two letters after his name.

Jane Anson has lived in Bordeaux since 2003 and is author of Inside Bordeaux (BB&R Publishing 2020, called a ‘category buster’ by Wine Anorak and ‘the Bordeaux bible’ by Le Figaro), Haut-Bailly (First Press Editions 2021), Wine Revolution (Quarto 2017), The Club of Nine (Katz Publishing 2016) Angélus (Editions de la Martiniere, 2016) and Bordeaux Legends, a history of the 1855 First Growth wines (Stewart, Tabori & Chang, 2013), as well as co-author or translator of over a dozen wine and travel books.
She has won several awards for her writing, including Louis Roederer Wine Online Communicator of the Year 2020, and Born Digital Best Editorial 2020.
Jane was the first woman to deliver the André Simon lecture for the Wine and Food Society since the lecture series began in 1971, speaking in June 2020 on the subject of terroir in Bordeaux. After almost 20 years as Bordeaux correspondent and columnist for Decanter magazine, she has now launched her own website.
She is a graduate of the DUAD tasting diploma with the Bordeaux Institute of Oenology and an accredited wine teacher at the Bordeaux Ecole du Vin.

More about today’s winery
The Tenuta di Fessina project was born in 2007, when after a series of trips aimed at studying and discovering the Etna terroir, Silvia Maestrelli, late Tuscan producer and pioneer on the volcano, decided to stop in Rovittello, on the northern side, where today the beating heart of Fessina resides. Here she was captivated by the uniqueness of the place, the very particular position of the soil, gathered between two volcanic slopes dating back to 1809 and 1911. From here it all begins, first in the North, precisely in 2007, then to the South West, one of the bets initials made in 2009, and finally to the East, in the municipality of Milo, starting from 2012. The philosophy of TDF project, is to collect and vinify different snapshots, all taken from different sides and only in historical reference areas. Jacopo Maniaci takes place at the winery in 2014 as winery director and in 2021 as CEO, he graduated Economics and communication at UNI of Messina, Sicily, and took a Master Degree at the University of Gastronomic Sciences in Pollenzo, Cuneo. His family is in restaurants and breeding in the mountains of Nebrodi, but he lives at the winery since 2017, taking care of the whole TF project. Fessina in particular rests on an alluvial residual, pyroclastic, a sandy and fine deposit, made of volcanic sand and pumice, dating back between 5,000 and 15,000 years old, draining and capable of guarantee elegance and verticality. Today the winery sells in 20 countries, with average 80.000 bottles of DOC Etna wines.

Born in Milan in 1985, Ambrogio studied in both England and Italy before working in renewable energy and real estate. He eventually returned to his roots, taking over the winery founded by his mother, Erika Ratti, in 1994.
Today, alongside CEO and winemaker Elena Pozzolini, Ambrogio leads a passionate team dedicated to producing elegant, terroir-driven wines that reflect the soul of Bolgheri. Under their leadership, Tenuta Sette Cieli has earned its place among the great names of the Super Tuscan category, featured in top restaurants and prestigious wine clubs around the world.

He has been the lead for many national research projects in the field of physiology, agricultural techniques, and vine genetics. As the author of over 350 publications on vine and viticulture in national and international journals, you can bet he knows his stuff!

Originally from Sydney Australia, Steve Edwards emigrated with his family to the UK when he was a teenager. He studied food preparation and food service at Newton College of Further Education before joining the RAF's catering squadron. After leaving the armed forces he came to Devon in 1987 to join the team at Gidleigh Park. Steve worked closely with Michael Caines at Gidleigh Park to achieve and maintain 2 Michelin stars, helping to deliver service and hospitality of the highest calibre, and developing his knowledge and passion for wine, working and maintaining one of the best cellars in the UK. In 2002, Steve took some time away from work to further his knowledge of wine, travelling extensively and visiting wineries and producers in France, Spain, Australia and the United States, working a full vintage at Chateau Routas in Provence. On his return to the UK in 2003, he joined up again with Michael as the Food and Beverage Manager for the Michael Caines Restaurant at the Royal Clarence. When ABode Hotels was formed by Michael and Andrew Brownsword, Steve was an instrumental member of the management team as Head of Group Services, responsible for general service standards within the ABode hotel group and for ensuring that Michael's unique 'service with style' was delivered in all of his numerous outlets. From 2012 - 2014 Steve was Group Operations Manager for Andrew Brownswords Hotels.

Cascina Elena was founded in 2020 in a small natural amphitheater in Rocchetta Belbo, Alta Langa. Here it produces grapes and makes wine directly according to the dictates of organic farming. The vineyards cover just over four hectares, all clustered in a single plot adjacent to the winery and surrounded by forest. 
The winery philosophy is to accompany the vines in their most natural expression, intervening minimally where necessary.

She’s passionate about terroir wine made with autochthonous grape varieties and constantly looking for them and their small producers.
