Silent Servant is the primary pseudonym of California electronic artist Juan Mendez, who produces techno with a heavy post-punk/industrial influence. He first began releasing material as Silent Servant during the mid-2000s, when he was a key member of the influential techno collective Sandwell District. Following numerous well-received underground singles, he made a major impact on the techno world with Negative Fascination, his acclaimed 2012 full-length debut. Following Mendez's co-founding of the Jealous God label in 2013, as well as several singles and collaborations with the likes of Marcel Dettmann and Phase Fatale, Silent Servant released his second album, the more overtly EBM-influenced Shadows of Death and Desire, in 2018.  2023 sees Mendez continuing to Play the US and Europe, New releases On L.I.E.S., Tresor and maintaining his sixth year of the Optimistic Decay radio show on NTS.

Live and unreleased techno from an underrated German duo.

Few people have shaken up the dance world as much as Ron Morelli in recent years. With his punk attitude and lo fi aesthetics, his L.I.E.S. label has flooded the underground world with raw, dirty, imperfect music for freaks and outsiders. The New Yorker himself produces a sketchy variety of sound that draws on “the fear and repulsion of basic human interaction,” amongst other things, and he has also nurtured his own community of likeminded artists. Together they have made for an unlikely but influential crew of weirdos whose take on noise is truly singular. 

The one hour set he has served up for us here is just the same. It is a largely atmospheric affair that marries knackered drums with glassy melodies, deep space energies with an impending sense of apocalyptic doom. Always absorbing and subversive, this is insular music that runs a gamut of emotions from tortured to optimistic and thus keeps you trapped in Morelli’s musical head from start to finish.

His progressive sessions, profound and with long mixes, are real voyages that sail through experimental music, ambient and horizontal and dubby techno. His productions are 4x4 experiments of low tempo with field recordings and marked spaces, where he explores timbres, textures and cinematographic structures. He is resident at the Alpenglühen and Taiga sessions and owner of the label Antimatter together with Bule, and Alpenglühen (the label).
He is co-running also the labels Downbeat, Memories on wax and Eleve.

I'm talking about DJ Qu from New York, he runs the label Strength Music Recordings, which I'm a super huge fan from. The music is panning between house and techno but has it's own vibe. This year was obviously very different with NWB being a stream where my set started at noon instead of 11pm. I had been quarantining upstate for months with my friend Otis Mass (Massive Original), and we decided to pair his visuals to my set to do something special with the format. Without any real pressure to get a dancefloor moving, I decided to start things off very slowly and build things up for Mike Servito's set. It is always an honor to be a part of No Way Back, and this year was no different.
