Michael, As far as manual speedlights go, a very attractive option is to find some old Nikon speedlights. The Nikon SB-24, SB 26, and SB-28 are still widely available on the used market. They were powerful, as they were the top of the line speedlights when they were new. And, while they aren't compatible with the current Nikon iTTL system, they still function fine as manual speedlights.  If you don't want to go to the used market, an attractive manual speedlight is the LumoPro 180.  I don't know how available it is in Europe, as it is made for a small US company and sold through Midwest Photo Exchange. Joe

Hey, Michael. I find that the simplest manual flash meets my needs, and the Neewer TT560 flashes are $50.00 so I can have a few of them plus cheap triggers for less than a single high-end flash. I use them inside Westcott Apollo softboxes. They recycle at full power faster than my expensive Pentax flashes do, they are trivial to configure and I haven't had one die yet. I have done several long shoots with them and only once has one overheated and gone into safety shutdown. Sometimes you like your background to be black, as in pitch black.
