When artists with the pedigree of Drumsound & Bassline Smith drop an album, it’s big news. With roots stretching back to the absolute foundations of rave music, this production team has legendary status. While keeping their underground credentials intact, they’ve been able to achieve mainstream chart success, perform on some of the biggest stages this music has to offer, and bring through many other monumental artists in their role as bosses of Technique Recordings. So this brand new collection of material is, no doubt about it, going to create waves.

With the first assured, slick bass tones and the eponymous vocal in the intro of Come With Me, we’re delivered straight into the big room sound that has set parties alight across the world. As the tune builds and drops, though, it becomes something diferent. There’s a dirty, grinding mid-range bass to get that screwface going. There are sonic references to other Drumsound & Bassline Smith tunes for the real fans to spot. As soul, filth, and production flourishes combine, we’re being shown the blueprint for the rest of the album.

You see, there are hints at a junglist past in tunes like Warrier and Ouija, but combined with the huge sound that the DBS studio is capable of creating. That collision of old and new comes to a head most clearly in the Brinsley Forde-laced Beautiful Danger, as gorgeous reggae vocals blend into a tear-out bassline-led rave-wrecker.

And then there are the nods to Drumsound & Bassline Smith’s history in the recon gured versions of Odyssey and Outlaw Renegade. These tunes, originally released a decade apart, both share the distinction of crossing sub-genre boundaries, and are as likely to be heard in a jump-up party as on a festival main stage. The inclusion of them here provides a marker of just how representative of the whole DnB scene these producers really are.

Of course, this overview barely scratches the surface. There’s the cinematic majesty of the collaboration with Prolix, Welcome to the Machine. There’s the gangsta funk of Roadblock, and the skank-out call-and-response of Technique Badboy. There’s the skippy syncopation of Control. There are subtleties and gems to be discovered throughout the whole album, as much a treat for the listener as for the raver.

So, this, their third LP, is like a gallery exhibit of the many facets of Drumsound & Bassline Smith. Their past, their present, and maybe their future, is laid out in intricate detail and with the sheen of sheer production class which marks them out from the crowd. Every tune on this album tells a chapter of their story while simultaneously being a straight-up banger. There aren’t many producers who could pull that off , but this is Drumsound & Bassline Smith were talking about here. So, of course they can.

Viper have always been known as a label that has actively sought out new talent to bring to the spotlight; their strength comes from both a diverse roster, a constant stream of fresh talent, and some of the scene’s most respected veterans, all in one place. With names like Metrik, Fred V & Grafix, ShockOne, Delta Heavy, Sigma, Nero, DC Breaks, and more all starting their career on the prolific label, there’s no question label-boss Futurebound has a knack for discovering diamonds in the rough. Following Viper’s newest mystery signee Giganti, Futurebound has just signed another talented newcomer to the label, this time going by the name of Millbrook. 
Millbrook is no stranger to releasing killer music; a look into his past will provide insight how he cut his teeth writing and releasing drum and bass under previous alias Vacuum. With an impressive amount of support and airtime from the likes of Bassnecter, Noisa, DJ Hype, Camo & Krooked and Glitch Mob already under his belt, Michel Losch, aka Millbrook, is now ready to elevate his sound to the next level in a new partnership with Viper.
Making a remarkable introduction for himself, ‘The Rise’ is the first taste of the Luxembourg based producer’s rebrand. Written with the talented Vorso and featuring industry favourite Mad Hed City on vocals, ‘The Rise’ is a raw, gritty, pounding masterpiece with a drop that is guaranteed to leave jaws on the floor. A charming intro melody quickly evolves into something much more sinister, emotion, followed by pure adrenaline, pumping from Mad Hed City’s iconic voice before breaking down into something minimal, funky, and all around technically brilliant. 
The flip side of the single gives us a glimpse at Millbrook’s much more elegant side – a cinematic opening teases at his sound design ability while introducing a variety of power-packed chords for an instantly memorable tune. Delivering a different kind of funk with the drop, Millbrook has certainly proven he is a force to be reckoned with with this release. 
A celebration of the label’s diversity, Millbrook’s introductory release promises a lot more to look forward to. Keep your eyes peeled for more from Millbrook this year, alongside Viper’s growing roster of new and formidable talent.

Task Horizon make a comeback on Evolution Chamber with the next part of their ‘Hack the Planet’ EP series; already solidifying fan’s expectations with ‘Disintegrate’, the second edition of its sequence is just as explosive on impact. ‘Mekaneck’ continues the high-arching trend which was set up through ‘Disintegrate’ whilst simultaneously reaffirming why they’re seen as some of the most technically adept producers within the contemporary drum & bass scene.

Not only does ‘Mekaneck’ also represent Task Horizon’s second record to drop on the newly relaunched Evolution Chamber, alongside Anglo Russian production duo Magnetude, and Receptor, it brings forward the theme which each track on the label dives into. Evolution Chamber has committed itself to creating stories out of its catalogue and this time ‘Mekaneck’ centres itself around the hero whose name many sci-fi fans will recognise.

Telling the tale of ‘Mekaneck’ with splitting, chaotic drum sequences, which are perfectly refined yet still shattering with their power, its jaunty riffs add the stamp which makes Task Horizon’s music so noticeable on the dancefloor. Punctuated by percussive slaps and empowered, frenzied spikes of synthesis, you’re pulled into the chaos even through its first breakdown. ‘Mekaneck’ is urgent, bewildered and takes you through the heroes agonised journey. Task Horizon set you up to be moved into the world of the Evolution Chamber, this time as ‘Mekaneck’ battles for his place in its universe.
