After two stunning releases on Exit Records in 2018 and 2020, 2022 marks Itoa’s third offering to dBridge’s esteemed catalogue.

With his ‘Oh No’ EP, the London artist follows hypnotic loops into a treasure trove of 160 and bass bangers that are sure to keep their cool even as they set dancefloors on fire.

From the slouchy, wall-melting fuzz of ‘We Want’, to the breakneck claustrophobia of Girlboss Microplastix, the release keeps the body at its core: in Itoa’s words, “trying to make music that makes me want to move when surrounded by uncertainty and possible collapse.” Fierce, but subtle: funky, and still ice cold.

For the title track, Itoa incorporates spicy vocal grit from Japanese vocalist Nakamura Minami / なかむらみなみ, a rapper with affiliations to iconic Tokyo-based imprint Trekkie Trax. ‘Oh No’ takes jacking acid to new levels, unleashing an infectious 303 workout not just for the feet, but the shoulders too. Go ahead and whip your hair to this one—then take a sweat break before ‘Fonda U’ continues to tear up the tracklist with crisp wubs and a drumbeat that just won’t quit.

On the flip, ‘Girlboss Microplastix’ and ‘Catch Eyes’ hit a perfect combo of neurofunk hypnosis and raise-yer-gunfingaz fuel. Who said a 303 couldn’t tag team a reese bass… Jump-up, footwork, bassline and braindance all make their cameos here and the results are delicious—fine dining for the UK heads.

https://soundcloud.com/kindergartenrecords returns with a VA full of depraved glamour and malicious intent, welcoming back https://soundcloud.com/drvmmy and Despina with a pair of unholy club-movers ready to put the fear into any dance, while Italian duo Train to Eltanin make their first appearance on the label with a mangled stomper that splutters with chaotic energy. As for Ma Sha Ru, Taiga is the most accomplished use of Masha’s vocals to date, cocooning them in a tempestuous barrage of pulsating bass and a swirling, kinetic drive.

Newcomers Train to Eltanin are co-founders of the Cyberspeak Collective in Milan. Just in their early 20s, their contribution, Bambam speaks to a prodigious talent, taking a starting point almost reminiscent of 90s big beat before ripping it to shreds immediately, squeezing every ounce of freakiness from it’s bizarre vocal snippet and contorting the track beyond any recognition.

Drummy and Despina, featured on KINDER002 and KINDER003 respectively, double down on this atmosphere. The former, having shown already his penchant for the sinister, evokes the spooky raison d'etre of its namesake in RL STINE, and builds a shuffling stepper over PS2 squeaks, and a gargling broth of bass and taught drum hits. Despina meanwhile delves into disarray with Entropics, named for “the tendency of a system to go from a state of order to one of chaos.” The result is two build-ups for maximum tension, broken with two break-neck plunges into the abyss and a cataclysmic flurry of knotty beats and bottomless subs.

The comp will be released on Friday 13th November! Over the last few months GAB has been extremely lucky to work with 15 producers from Leeds and further afield to curate an album of UKG, breakbeat, techno and jungle edits.

All coin related income from this compilation will be donated to MAP, a Leeds-based charity providing alternative music education to young people who cannot access mainstream schooling. In these trying times, we must support charities such as MAP which are integral to the North’s creativity and vibrant music scene.
