Holiday vocal louder alienation loneliness and regrets

at the end of 2017, then 13-year-old basketball-playing louie, under the name big lou, released a song exclusively on soundcloud called backseat. using an illegally downloaded beat from youtube, he recorded the track almost as a joke. living in highland park, a north shore suburb of chicago where he resided from ages 12 to 16, louie stood out in a town without any young hip-hop creators. to louie’s surprise, within a few days, backseat hit 1,000 streams. fast forward two months, and he was walking down his middle school hallway being called big lou, with classmates shouting, 'bumping in the backseat.'

from the outside, it seemed like louie was a success and on the verge of stardom. but internally, he hated being called big lou and felt like people were mocking him—after all, the song itself was a joke. this feeling of being misunderstood led him to keep his music private, and for the next seven years, he quietly developed his craft in the shadows. occasionally, he dropped tracks under aliases like pradalou and breezy pluto, but he never released anything on mainstream platforms until now.

over those seven years, louie gained life experiences that shaped his artistry. in high school, he struggled with substance abuse, a gambling addiction, the loss of family and friends, and, ultimately, being kicked out of his home by his mother. his destructive tendencies were negatively affecting his younger siblings, who looked up to him and loved him and his music. louie moved to san diego to live with his dad, graduated high school, and tried college before dropping out, finding that campus life wasn’t for him.

after several failed attempts to find his footing, louie faced homelessness and a mental health crisis that led to hospitalization in early 2024. but he emerged stronger, boasting six months of sobriety, a clear vision, and newfound stability. now running a law firm and self-employed, louie credits his turnaround to a supportive environment and the resources to finally create his debut mixtape. much of it was written during long hours at kaldi’s coffee in clayton, missouri.

the lead single from the mixtape, frontseat, reflects on backseat and the trials and tribulations louie endured afterward. following the release of backseat, louie gained attention from popular girls at school, including his first girlfriend, logan. in frontseat, louie shifts between the past and the present, recalling road trips from st. louis to chicago for business meetings, music video shoots, and potential label and distribution deals. the song was written just a week before he attended a formal with an ex-girlfriend he hadn’t spoken to in four years. after being off instagram for over two years, he noticed her follow him, checked her profile, and reached out. they reconnected, and she asked him to be her date.

the song also touches on deeper struggles. louie reflects on his complicated relationship with his mother, who still feels betrayed by his behavior at 16, as well as the loss of his close friend andrew in 2021. louie received the devastating news during a facetime call with logan, which was the last time they spoke on the phone. he also writes about his former best friend luke, with whom he shared similar struggles and addictions. together, they used to sit in the nosebleeds at bulls games, dreaming of more. now, louie watches games from the floor but longs for the simplicity of those old days.

in frontseat, louie acknowledges that he can never fully return to the time when his town embraced him for backseat. though he is now more self-actualized and comfortable with himself, he reflects on how everything has changed. the title signifies his growth and confidence, but the track is laced with nostalgia and acceptance that nothing will ever be the same.
