Gone Do

I remember sitting in my room recording this record, not knowing it would be the very song that would begin my healing, from one of the most trying dating experiences to date. I found my heart in the palm of what now feels like a stranger, and making the decision to walk away was utterly gut-wrenching. That universal feeling of wanting to go back to the days where your stomach fluttered at the sight of his name on my phone, is something I will always credit him the author for. Yet, it’s from this song on that I started writing and feeling in a way that directly mirrored the exact chapter in my story of love, which was something I didn’t do often or as intentionally. I describe this song as the backbone to the emotion of this next era of mine, and the catalyst for boys like me feeling seen. Ironically before I let him go, he ended up loving the song and requesting to hear it all the time. As much as I loved that he loved it, I knew it was over at that point.

PNB Rock was one of the first rappers from Philly to really get me to start liking rap. This song I used to run in the ground when it came out, and saw it befitting to cover it with the announcement of his passing.

In honor of Chris Brown's documentary, "Welcome To My Life", I was inspired to record one of my favorite songs by him, "All Back" from the album "Fame". This song speaks to me on levels no-one understands, and really is the anthem of my life lately. You remember the laughter you use to have? The smile you used to carry? The hope you used to believe by? This is what it means to me, and even if you've never heard the song before, I hope you enjoy it. If you like it, feel free to share with your friends. Everyday I wake up exhausted by the climate, yet inspired by everyone choosing to use their voice. Lately I’ve been voicing my opinions about the very things I’m passionate about, and started asking myself how I could be louder; so I started writing. Sampling one of my favorite beats by @popwansel and @oakestra, I wrote a song to the black man. I asked those around me (who don’t look like me) why the “black man” was important to them, and I used their answers in the song. I want us to know how much we are loved, and appreciated every single day. Not just by our black queens and other communities, but by US. I hope this brings a smile to someone’s face; it did to mine.

Black Man, I Love You

Honestly, while the protests have subsided some, everyday my timeline reminds me that racism is still very much real and alive. Yesterday, I broke down in tears overwhelmed by the multitude of examples before me where injustice, racism and violence was and still is shown in so many shapes and colors. While we’ve made so much noise over the last month, so much work still needs to be done. Breonna Taylor’s murderers (12) are still alive, and uncharged. Robert Fuller was just so willingly “found” hanging dead from a tree. Police all across the country, and even in other countries, still use brutal force before logic, and we see it multiply by the day it seems. 

So much of this is overwhelming, to the point where many of us truly can’t breathe, yet it’s fueling us to demand change, and let that change begin with us. I wrote this song in a moment where I felt overwhelmed just to be black and a man in America, and my prayer is that for those of you who don’t look like us, that you feel the pain and cry out from ALL OF US. WE ARE TIRED OF DYING AT THE HANDS OF THOSE SWORN TO PROTECT US.

Took a stab at one of my favorite songs, "Confirmation" from Bieber's latest album, Changes. I love the lyrics to this song, and now more than ever, its reassurance for looking at life through a different scope and focusing on the things that make us feel, and make us happy.
