With many tongue in cheek references, this song can be considered to have a theme of drug use, overdose, addiction and death. The meloncholy lyrics are sang despairingly over a synth bass line that wouldn't sound out of place in a Roger & Zapp b-side or some sort of hip hop edit mashed up with a Rick James a capella. In the hihttps://itskelpmusic.bandcamp.com/track/moonbathingghest registers lives a synthy flute line that relentlessly swings on the beat, dangerously close to sounding like Celtic Jazz, if that's a thing? The airy, Bay Ledges style lead vocals of Vaughn Faison, better known as Johker, blend with the Portuguese boy-band backing tones of Kleber Sampaio in a call and response with Jordie Sunshine's (Kelp) talk box ornamentation on a bed of echoey harpsichords and marble-cold rhodes. The culmination of these elements creates something that sounds like it was recorded in the mid-90s but written last week - watch out for that prog-funk break down before the last chorus.

Moonbathing

This is the first track of a new EP I've recently created. This song, and the rest of the EP are stepping into a more 'pop' direction than Kelp is used to. This is somewhat deliberate because I wanted to show that a poppy, maybe catchy little song is among the brushstrokes that I have in my arsenal. That main chorus idea is over 2 years old now. I knew I was gonna do something with it, but I didn't know it would be this song. I was listening to Tame Impala's 'The Slow Rush' fairly constantly at the time of writing it. It came more or less fully formed - the melody, chords and those chorus words: "can I pay for it later?" I reckon this came to me due to the advent of services like Klarna that allow you to buy now and pay later. When I considered this on an existential level, it made me think of the idea of impulsiveness, but coupled with anxiety. So, it's knowing your actions have consequences, but going through with it just to, maybe feel alright for even a little bit, at possibly a great cost. The original lyrics that followed this were "I just want to be nobody" - and this came as a result of, at the time, working long hours, gigging at weekends and the demands of being in a band and a band manager expecting, possibly too much, from me. I just wanted to be nobody, I just wanted some peace. Anyways that band broke up, and that song got shelved until very recently. I took it out and it sort of read like an entitled complaint from an outraged failure. So I leant into that and the words came together - eventually "I just want to be nobody" morphed into "wannabe nobody" which fit with the new meaning I was now able to percieve - it's an extended grievance from a WannabeNobody.

This song is a portrait of a city that was once named ugliest in the world. I didn't know this when I was passing through roughly a year ago. What struck me about Charleroi was a feeling of desolation, and unfinishedness. Half the city seemed to be imprisoned behind building sites. 

I did stay in an apartment for one night that overlooked the city. It did not overlook a dual carriageway; rather it’s the great winding motorway that brings you into the city. The bus stops just on the other side of a bridge that takes you into town. On your way across the bridge you’re met with commerical construction (Hera) fencing, unkempt roadside weeds and foliage, and huge concrete buildings, and this palpable feeling of inherent threat, danger and sadness.

If there's room in music for a lounge act fronted by an inch high, ethereal deep-sea diver with a preoccupation for vocoders, FM synthesis and bad midi; Kelp intends to fill it with the most garish of cutting edge, white elephant, Retrowave, elevator-jingles, now with added salsa.

This experiment into futuristic, holographic swing band inspired, island anti-pop hopes to sound like the illegitimate fusion of surrealist exotica horn-pipery and the distant whirring of some cosmic, Gregorian polka, leaking from a submerged, underwater cantina during El Niño.

Kelp, also known as Jordie Sunshine, is the Belfast, North of Ireland based, talk box yielding, experimental electronic and symphonic pop, HD bedroom producer and songster extraordinaire. Plucked from the void in the peak-plague days of 2020, Kelp has given us 13 singles and 3 EPs so far, with most notably ‘Lamentation’ and ‘Shady Palms’ making their way on to Tom Robinson's Mixtape on BBC Radio 6 Music.

Kelp's latest offering appeared in the form of a seminal live show in Belfast city center, considered to be a world's first in AR/VR live entertainment and electro-funk cover versions of the original 1987 'Fireman Sam' theme. Up next an animated film with the soundtrack doubling up as the debut album.
