Essex based Joe Hythe has just released his first single Dorian, marking the first release in a double EP project four years in the making. Ranging from almost acapella vulnerability to epic, cinematic joy, ‘Dorian’ is an ode to queer fantasy heroes in media, one fueled by shimmering synths and earth shattering kick drums. Beneath the sparkle of Berlin based Wikihow Adventure Cruise’s vaporwave inspired production however, lie some real gut punches: for all the majesty and hope of ‘Dorian’s soaring choruses, Hythe doesn’t let us forget that reality is just a page-turn or a powercut away: “You and I we’ll run ‘till the morning, baby ignore all their warnings, grab what we can steal, fuck like what we have is real.” Despite the strides made in queer representation in the media, Hythe can’t forget- and won’t let us forget- that even in 2020, life for most of the LGBTQ community in the real world, is far from a fantasy.

“I’ve always been obsessed with fantasy, with escaping reality, with books, and films, and theatre, and video games. On these flights of fancy I’ve crushed hard on more than one character over the years. Sometimes they’ve been in relatably uncomfortable situations as a consequence of their sexuality, sometimes they exist in a world where sexuality isn’t even an issue, and sometimes they aren’t even explicitly queer characters. This song is a love letter to all those video game scoundrels and fantasy novel heroes I've fallen for over the years: Dorian Pavus, Arthur Morgan, Robert Small, Gill Brody, Erik the Slayer, Seregil & Alec, that ginger barman in Fable 3. It’s an ode to the importance and power of queer representation in media, of the excitement and validation it can grant to young outsiders. Unusually for me, it’s a requited love song, an outpouring of camaraderie and optimism, an almost naive hope that this time we might make it out (of this video game level) alive.”
