I’m exploring AI DJ Mixing using my own music as the guinea pig.  I find this to be a really interesting area of technology.  On one hand, my preference is mixing by ear on Technics 1200 turntables.  However as we know, the world has spoken and seems to prefer aids such as waveforms, cue points, quantization and sync buttons.  I am ok with that, and have used every variation possible during my DJ career.  

This does beg the question...if the “aids” mentioned are preferable, affording us more time to dance & party behind the decks, then why not take it a step further and just let the AI do it?  

While you will clearly see that the results are not quite what I would say “ready” with off the shelf products anyway, surely next iterations will allow an artist to “train” the AI on their mixing style, and just let the digital twin do the work.

About This Mix

This mix is very basic, maybe one step up from a playlist.  The songs are from an Album, so I did not want BPM changes.  The initial idea was to see how little I could do and just let it rip on full automatic everything mode.  That did not work out, the “AI” doesn’t get it;)

5 or 6 tried later, I tried giving it some “prompts” by putting in/out markers to force it to start and stop mixing when I wanted it to.  This worked OK, but with the BPM transitions on automatic, it still could not come up with anything that sounded good or what would be expected from a human DJ.

Ultimately, I turned off the BPM transitions and let it do the rest, essentially deciding what effect to use on the transitions.  I’ll give it a green light on that, but admittedly, a standard Apple Music or Spotify playlist would have been fine in this scenario.

About the Setup

I use the same software, djay Pro daily for my mixing by ear sessions, of course with all the automations turned off.  It is a great product, in fact it is my favorite for powering my HID setup with turntables and phase DJ, and it is the only one with an Apple Music streaming integration.
