The river of Aleyrac is the river along which La Vallée Électrique festival is located. I used to play there when I was a child. Some monks had built the priory of Aleyrac on the source of this river.
Water can be seen rising from the ground inside the ruins of this little church. At that time, the river was said to be sacred and its water could heal.

As one chapter closes, another opens. Following the passing of group member J.Derwort in 2019, Hanyo van Oosterom’s legacy work brings about the next evolution of the Chi project: Son of Chi. AI-25 sees subtle developments in the sound and expansion of tonal vocabulary, whilst retaining the organic instrumentation and rapturous dreamtime narratives. Flourishes of piano float elegantly with poise, and long-drawn flutes breathe life into the shifting landscape. Shadows play in the thick vegetal overgrowth, the air is heavy with the scent of age-old evocations. Speakers drift in and out of undulating reverie, forgotten transmissions from the repository of consciousness. Against the wide backdrop of the harsh and wild unknown, a feeling of peace resides within. Night and day gradually collapse into one another, as loops of lapping textures glisten quietly with mystical beauty.

As a child, Aggy liked to steal their parents’ phones and send texts to random numbers. The messages Aggy sent were kindhearted and peculiar. Sometimes, Aggy would text complex questions of a spiritual nature. Kids’ radical lack of filters is what makes them wise, but also very annoying, is what the parents repeatedly agreed whenever Aggy did this. The strangers’ replies, which always arrived after the parents had their phones back, were usually bemused, and rarely, but sometimes, they were belligerent. Disciplining Aggy for this behavior wasn’t simple.

“Aggy, honey, you can’t keep doing this,” said one of the parents. “We know you’re not being mean, but it could be dangerous, talking to strangers like this.”

“No phone for a week,” the other said.

Aggy took these haranguings gracefully. As the verdict was read out a subversive crack appeared at the edges of Aggy’s mouth. Once communicated, Aggy accepted these punishments with a tiny but steadfast stoicism.

James Hoff’s Inverted Birds and Other Sirens was composed after a visit to Chernobyl in 2018. Both works utilize GPS signals recorded within the zone of exclusion as well as orchestral arrangements for woodwinds, brass, and strings. The first piece was the soundtrack for HOBO UFO (v. Chernobyl), an audio-visual work based on a hacked version of Google Street View that PAN released in 2019. The second track is new to this release. 

Chernobyl holds a unique cultural and political position and Hoff’s initial visit was prompted by the site’s complicated ideological function for the west and the slippage between its unimaginable horrors and its recreation and fabrication within popular imagination by the entertainment industry. However, when Hoff was in Pripyat and the exclusion zone he found himself more affected by its ghosts than by the site itself. This realization was profound and prompted him to compose works that were emotionally driven rather than overly conceptually. 

While there, he recorded GPS signals that surrounded the overgrown landscape, the concrete sarcophagus, and the dark tourist attractions that remain after the catastrophe. Once back in his studio in Brooklyn, he deconstructed these recordings, pulling them apart and layering them with conventional chamber instruments in an effort to create a timbre that reflected the complex emotional layers of the exclusion zone and the people who had lived there. The result is a music that moves, as the artist has characterized it, like “melodies walking through a melting landscape.” 

Of course, much has changed since Hoff’s initial visit. The work is now being released in a radically different political context as the horrors of a real-time war are waged around it. Despite this, Hoff feels that the emotional underpinnings of the recordings resonate with our times, or at least his conception of it.
