In this episode we are focusing on ICT accessibility - specifically for persons with disabilities. People who identify as living with disability represent 15% of the world’s population, which is currently around 1 billion people. Within this population there exists a very wide array of disabilities encompassing physical mobility, autism and speech delays, persons who are deaf and hard of hearing, and persons with visual disability . Up to 70% of disabilities are invisible but they can still present a barrier to access and use the growing range of information technologies available. 

This episode explores innovations in the accessibility space from established companies like Google and Microsoft to the new softwares and entrepreneurial ventures developed by people living with disability who experienced and realised a need that was not being met, and did something about it.  With many extracts from the WSIS FORUM 2021 discussions.

Not only does the technology we use create mountains of e-waste that can be difficult to dispose of safely, but much of it also contains valuable, rare and finite minerals and metals that are essential for the continuing production of new models of technology. Technology For Good # 14: E-waste - using, repairing and recycling

In this first episode of the podcast, Connie and Sophiyat, from the Generation Connect Asia-Pacific and African Regional Youth Groups, share with us their personal stories on how the Covid-19 pandemic impacted their education on two opposite sides of the world, while questionning the relevance of the current educational system in the wake of a global transition to online learning.

Women are underrepresented in the field of cybersecurity. ITU’s Women in Cyber mentorship programme, organized together with the EQUALS Global Partnership and the Forum for Incident Response Teams (FIRST), aims to help bridge the gap. In this episode of the UNconnected, Doreen Bogdan-Martin, Director of the ITU Telecommunication Development Bureau speaks with Louise Marie Hurel and Angela Matlapeng, who participated as a mentor and mentee respectively, in the programme. They discuss the challenges and opportunities for women in cyber, and the way forward for women to co-create and lead solutions in this field.

Emergency telecommunications are critical for disaster risk reduction and management. Oftentimes, telecommunication networks themselves are among the first casualties of extreme weather events. There is a need to better protect vital infrastructure and make it more resilient. Ronald Jackson, head of the United Nations Development Programme’s (UNDP) Disaster Risk Reduction and Recovery team, discusses opportunities for technology and connectivity for better disaster preparedness and management, with BDT Director Doreen Bogdan-Martin.

While STEM subjects are key drivers in an increasingly global and digital society, less than 30% of STEM professionals are women. Women and girls face additional barriers compared to their men counterparts when trying to access safe and equal STEM education, as well as pursue careers in STEM.
Ahead of this year's International Girls in ICT Day celebrations, Nisreen Deeb, Executive Director of the Lebanese League for Women in Business, and BDT Director Doreen Bogdan-Martin discuss the importance of encouraging more women and girls to follow STEM, and how to get around roadblocks that might be in their way.

The exponential rise of technology and its widespread adoption has led to a dual effect. On the one hand, there are a rising number of devices and electronics in the market, exacerbating an already growing waste and resource challenge. Since I was very young, probably six, seven years old, I was fascinated with the night skies. I would look at these beautiful, shiny objects in the darkness of the night sky and wonder what they are, why they're bright, you know, how I can go get closer to them. I wanted to go to space to touch them, to understand them. And this question, as I grew a little bit older, the question of, you know, why are we here? What am I doing here? What is this, how this world came to be and the role of humanity and the place we are in time in the grand scheme of things. So these questions are, and my curiosity to find the answers to these questions, what drew me to math science and got me set up on my path to actually being where I am an engineer, a business woman, and an astronaut."

ITU Technologized: Interview with Harry Yeff, Artistic Intelligence Visionary Initiative

In 1973, ITU Secretary-General Mohamed Mili had asked Jean-Pierre Canel, a versatile amateur composer and member of ITU staff, for something to play on World Telecommunication Day on 17 May, when a new building (the Tower) was to be formally opened at ITU headquarters in Geneva. The result was the Telecommunications Anthem (Hymne des Télécommunications). On that occasion, the anthem was performed as a simple instrumental. However, an impressive orchestral version with full choir premiered at another opening ceremony in September 1973 at the ITU Plenipotentiary Conference in Malaga-Torremolinos, Spain.
