Okay, cool story.
I'm looking at vocaloids, so a good friend of mine rendered some vocals for me to play with, settings at 0, plug-and-played the VSQ (so that might explain if it doesn't sound quite right... aside from the fact I'm using headphones I'm not used to mixing with).  This was the result, and this is my second time ever mixing Vocaloid voices.
