The room was cold and sterile, matching the temperament of the panel that sat stony-faced across from him. He'd heard they were hard nuts to crack, that many had tried but failed to charm them. He had no idea what they were thinking as he responded to their questions, listing his attributes and accolades. They gave nothing away, barely a twitch of the mouth or a a blink of the eye. That was until he got up to leave, and with a nod of the head and an outstretched hand they welcomed him to the team. 

Georgian DJ, producer and long term resident at Tbilisi club KHIDI Vulkanski first landed on Phase Fatale's BITE imprint back in 2018 with his Science Gardens EP that explored industrial and techno. Now, he's making his return for his first long player on the label, Skeptical Answers, which pushes the boundaries of club music even further than before, surveying the spaces between electro, club techno, broken beat and IDM.

For the second consecutive year, they enchant us with a distinct and intriguing synth sound, and today is no exception. Ofelia Ortodoxa, under Dystatik, unveils the latest release titled "Basics For Sadness," a six-track album available on tape. The digital release is scheduled for January 29th, and we're treating ourselves to a sneak peek with the track "I Can Tell You Anymore."

About the release:
Columbian DJ and producer Ofelia Ortodoxa makes a triumphant return to Dystatik, marking his debut album on the label. Hailing as one of Colombia's most expressive and interesting electronic music creators, Ofelia delves into various genres, from electro to ambient. "Basics For Sadness" is a collection of six tracks, drawing inspiration from old cassette recordings and featuring new collaborations with fellow artists. The result is a potent EP characterized by minimal synth and dark wave aesthetics, all enveloped in a nostalgic ambiance.

In 2010 Julie-Morand Ferron and Éric Trottier formed one of the most exciting duos in the Canadian electronic music scene. As Violence they created a distinct sound that captured all of their energy and enthusiasm for the things they held dear in the world around them. Since their relationship formed as teenagers, they went on to become creative partners in a constant exchange of musical and artistic ideas. Sadly, Julie passed away in 2022. She left a rich legacy behind, both as a devoted mother and also in her work as an eminent scientist, published in prestigious scientific journals. In her work as a formidable performer, she created Violence's last album as a duo with her partner Éric.

In "Open Windows," the delicate interplay of Roland CR-78, acoustic guitar, and dissonant organs masterfully illustrates this concept. These sparse yet potent elements, oscillating between distant echoes and intimate crescendos, form a backdrop of melancholic nostalgia, guiding listeners through the evocative landscapes crafted by Human Figures. Daniel Lewis, with his latest endeavor, finds his creative roots nurtured by releases on Frigio Records, rendering the term "new" a fitting but somewhat restrictive label. His distinctive sonic palette bears the imprint of diverse influences spanning the post-punk and wave scenes.

Within the eight tracks of "Open Windows," folk traditions are reimagined through a contemporary lens, seamlessly intertwining poignant ballads with rapid, experimental melodies. This fusion of tradition and innovation serves as the hallmark of Human Figures' stylistic evolution. That true beauty lies in the essentiality and meticulous combination of a few elements is sometimes not just a cliché. The delicate blend of Roland CR-78, acoustic guitar and dissonant organs that intertwine in Open Windows is a vivid demonstration of this. It is these few elements, now distant and hinted at and now close and deafening, that paint the backdrop of melancholic nostalgia where laconic whispers move the listener within the paintings that bear the sonic signature of Human Figures. To Daniel Lewis' new project, which has seen its springboard through releases on the label of his friends at Frigio Records, perhaps the adjective "new" is already quite tight. He has built a very recognizable sonic tibre, an influence of producers and listeners at different latitudes of the post-punk and wave scene. 

In the 8 canvases of Open Windows the folk tradition is repainted in a more contemporary guise: the sweet and sad litanies are alternated with fast and frenetic stornelli in which the combination of tradition and experimentation constitutes the stylistic signature. The open window through which the listener has the opportunity to look out in this album does not, however, give onto a natural external panorama. It projects into an inner world where introspection and silence are the only chance to grasp its sublime beauty.
