Mode Techno Vibes

Next up on Industry Standard we welcome a new group of artists hailing from Detroit, Outr Drive featuring vocalist Steffanie Christi’an. We don’t wish to give away too much info on who is behind this new project at the moment but be rest assured there’s some quality artistes involved, featuring both electronic producers and live musicians. Steffanie is an artist many may have heard of though her work with the legendary Inner City.

Their first outing sees Outr Drive deliver a low slung, soul drenched, deep house track with a live bass line and lush keys that set the tones of a track for a wonderful vocal from Steffanie. The song is both emotive and seductive and shows off her amazing vocal range. The pack also features an instrumental for the dubby heads out there.

We really love this record and are proud to have Outr Drive & Steffanie working with us at Industry Standard. This track will be a sure-fire hit over the summer months and beyond, and most likely a future classic!

That jolt of creativity: Ideas rush like shoals from the brain to the eyes and back again. They flex and move in unison but only one will hit the target… It’s down to you to make sure you use it well. Such is the case of any Amberoom session where Manuel Tur, Adrian Hoffmann and Ramin Nouyan. A hive mind that thrives on the rush of ideas at any one jamming session. 

As with their debut earlier this year, the concept is simple; grooving on machines with no premeditated intention but to dig deep into the vibe that choose to materialise through their collaborative spark that day… And letting it grow. 

Case in point: ‘Minoo’, a deep shimmering groove that’s so soft, hazy and warm it teeters right on the edge of Balearica while the piano and cleverly weaved percussion maintain energy and focus. ‘Craft’ continues the trip with a mischievous psychedelic glint in its eye. A mutated technoid afrobeat leads east into the thick sandstorm of synths that spiral, rise and tower like ancient pyramids. And just when you think they can’t rise any more, new heights a revealed. 

Finally ‘Klark’ seals the deal with a looser-limbed mystical handshake. Reminiscent of DJ Gregory’s early Faya Combo releases with a subdued Latin chord sequence, shuffled beats and a dusky atmosphere that could go on forever, it’s the end of yet another creative tale from Amberoom. A tale where ideas do the driving and the players are mere conduits. We told you they’d be back on Ovum soon… We look forward to their return.

Riva Starr arrives with his new EP Freedom in true Riva style, with each of the three tracks sampling tastes from three different flavours of music. Released on June 29th, Freedom provides a varied musical experience and a vibe that changes from track to track. The first collaboration on the EP is with Ramon Tapia, whose musical mission is to make people move. Freedom is definitely a groover, mixing up a steady beat with trumpets and steel drums, reflecting the exciting sounds of Brazilian carnivals. Both the dub mix and the original are prepared with a tasty dose of bass. Rockin On Swing introduces the MC skills of Trigganom for the second collab on the EP. Riva has infused relaxed vibes with a higher bpm and energetic, with unwinding sounds blended over a pulse to get your batty shaking. In the final collaboration with Dolomite, Be Your Best slows down the tempo with some old-skool beats. Super catchy and a definite stand-out track. Freedom is loaded with new ideas, fresh experiments and unexpected collaborations, each one a reminder of Rivas consistent curiosity and unpredictable style.
