With Applause V.A. Vol. 2, the Paris-based label continues its exploration of electronic music at the intersection of local and diasporic scenes. Curated by Matteo, this second compilation brings together both emerging and established artists from Europe, Africa, and the diasporas, with a focus on hybrid sounds and boundaryless rhythms.

Equally suited for club play and deep listening, the selection spans a wide range of aesthetics—from bass music to percussive techno, baile funk to Afro-Caribbean grooves. Returning contributors like Artem, DJ Travella, Blck Mamba, Lorkestra, and Hey Bony further anchor the label’s evolving identity, as they become increasingly connected to its booking agency and roster.

“As with the first volume, my aim was to capture a living and moving ecosystem,” Matteo explains. True to Applause’s ethos, the compilation acts as a bridge between diverse club cultures, highlighting bold and personal approaches to contemporary dance music.

A key part of what makes the kuduro-techno amalgams coming out of Portugal so spellbinding stems from its humanity. From its Detroit beginnings, electronic dance music attempted to speed up the future, one driven and directed by machines in true sci-fi fanboy fashion. Yet the Angolan influences on Lisbon’s transcendent contemporary club sounds keep much of the music grounded in the now, its polyrhythmic foundations a worthy counterpoint to the wicked British and American producers gleefully embracing auditory ruthlessness and sadism.

A Lisbon native, DJ N.K. has been an active and pioneering participant in this vibrant scene for some time. His overdue debut full-length DJ Do Ghetto [Lit City Trax] is actually named for the crew he joined some ten years ago which also featured future stars DJ Marfox and DJ Nervoso, among others. Both artists join their compatriot on respective collaborative cuts, the former on the stuttering mission statement “Ghetto Sound Of Lisbon” and the latter on the honking “Hoy.”

Peppered with succinct namesake drops, DJ Do Ghetto’s contents include a dozen of N.K.’s priceless productions crafted by a seasoned practitioner of the craft, from the straightforward gallop of “Zuguza” to the more outré options of “Urban Mafia” and “Punched Horn.” The furious tempos of “Matumbina” and “Orixas Groove” capture the urgency of the best in techno without sacrificing melody. “Tribalistic Face” hustles towards a beatific beatless breakdown before quickly picking up the pace and adding further organic instrumentation to the balmy mix.

DJ Doraemon é o nome artístico de Ivan Lima, DJ e produtor a viver no Miratejo, nos subúrbios de Lisboa. Ao crescer na periferia da capital portuguesa, as omnipresentes batidas do afrohouse, kuduro e tarraxo inspiraram o jovem DJ Doraemon, que aos 10 anos de idade começou a experimentar com software de produção musical após ver um amigo a brincar com o Fruity Loops. 

Desde então que não parou, e apesar da tenra idade, DJ Doraemon já foi responsável por um um impressionante número de lançamentos, incluindo vários singles, EPs e dois álbum, espalhados por várias plataformas digitais e editoras internacionais como a Basy Tropikalne, Enchufada ,CusCus Discos e Eletrocaine.
