Samhain XX was an experiment in streaming during an incredibly dark and uncertain time. The idea was since we couldn't get together physically, we could get our whole community together on a stream in a totally immersive environment that allowed for things that wouldn’t be possible to happen in the normal material state of events. To make it unique to its medium, and to therefore look beyond boundaries and travel distance and normal event times and all the other things that limit the possibilities in the real world. This allowed us to put together an over 30 hour dream line up with so many inspirations and heroes. Impossible things like having people from all over the world in a single stream, like Wata Igarashi from Japan, or Azu Tiwaline from the Sahara by way of France, or Solar from SF, or Eris Drew from deep in the T4T LUV NRG woods, Danny Daze in Miami or Clark Price in Pittsburgh and so on. So we were more than ecstatic that one of our favorite producers who happens to reside in London agreed to participate: Forest Drive West. His music is stellar and moves in so many directions, it is truly an honor to have his set close our weekly releases / rebroadcasts of the Samhain XX series. We can only hope these experiments will help us mutate to a more interesting future.

Chicago-based producer Zvrra is an advocate of techno in its many forms. Crediting the 2003 video game Midnight Club 2 as the starting point for her love of the genre, it's since this point she's been dreaming up her own genre-hopping productions that have ranged from industrial to tribal, ambient and house, showcasing her meticulous approach to sound and a distinct sense of texture and atmosphere.

Alongside producing and DJing, she also works in the world of video game development, a field that, when it comes to style and concepts, has continued to feed into her musical output including releases for Rare Type and Avian.

Hot on the heels of her debut LP Bizarroland, she he gets us over the midweek hump, taking us on a wild, pacy ride through diverse shades of techno. Buckle up!

Zvrra: The 'Wednesday Alternative' Mix

On Monday 3rd January 2022, our dearest and most cherished friend, Karen Wilkins passed away.

While we are overcome with sadness that she is no longer physically with us, we are also overflowing with endless love and immense gratitude for having known her.

She truly was one of a kind, an incredible soul in every possible way, ​and we are so blessed that she was in our lives.

Among so many other things, Karen was an amazing DJ (and resident for London-based Opulence collective), putting her heart and soul, just as she did with everything, into the music she loved so much.

Music bought us together, just as it has so many of others, and so we felt compelled to jump on the decks, something she loved so much to do, to honour her.

In life she taught us so so much, and her passing has reminded us of just how incredibly precious our time on this earth truly is.

We never know what is around the corner and as cliched as it sounds, we must do all that we can to make the most of the time we've been given.

So, throw yourself at the things that light a fire in your soul, that bring your happiness and make you feel alive. Spend time with the people you love. Push through your fears to live wholeheartedly, just as Karen did.

We felt Karen with us throughout this mix, dancing her heart away with the biggest smile on her face, just as she did at many On the 5th Day events, and nights across London, where she made dear friends who all held a special place in her heart.

She was a true inspiration and will certainly live on in our hearts for all time.

Nadia Struiwigh immediately turned heads with her debut album, Lenticular, on CPU Records. It wasn't her first record, but it was an auspicious release at an auspicious time for a label that was at the centre of a revival of early '90s IDM and electro styles. You could use those terms to describe Dutch producer Struiwigh's music, but you'd have to also mention ambient—just check out her last album, Pax Aurora, for Rotterdam powerhouse Nous'klaer Audio—and techno, which is the subject of her new RA Podcast.

Those familiar with Struiwigh only through her records might be surprised by this mix, which is over two hours of alternately atmospheric and pummeling techno. It highlights the versatility and potential of the genre, as well as Struiwigh's own outlook on it. She was a techno DJ before she started making the softer, weirder stuff, and she can recognize the music's innate emotional qualities, even at its most functional. As she says below, her intention is to "glue the best of both worlds" to create a "rare energy" with her DJing and production.

2018 saw the UK-born DJ/producer leaving a strong impression. The high level of support has continued into 2019, with white label tracks featuring in sets from Kr!z & Dustin Zahn, among others.

On the road Wise has made regular appearances at Jaded, London’s Sunday after-hours haven while his Berghain sets have undoubtedly grabbed the attention of the committed Berlin reveler. The remainder of 2019 keeps this young talent busy, with bookings spanning the UK, Europe and, South Africa with more releases set to drop across the next coming months.
