BBC Sound First- 'Notes on Water' (poetry by Amanda Dalton) (2021)

"Outside, on any given day, your skin might get hot from the suspicious glares of passers-by, or from cruising police cars, or from the bug-eyed security cameras that are planted on every building within sight". This is an audio essay on Derick's observations of hyper-visibility as a young Black male in one of the most surveilled cities in the world. Structured as a long walk, the piece joins ambient sounds of the street with fragments of memory and archival samples, bringing life to the feeling of alienation from the place he calls home.

'An audio documentary exploring what it means to leave your mark in places that have been shaped by flows of people from around the world. Focusing on a quiet street in northwest London, the piece profiles a small family run cafe that has stood there for more than half a century. We listen to Mario, the owner and soul of the place, as he reflects on the cafe’s life over the years, and we hear a strange story that seems to make little sense, but has certainly captured the imagination'.

Ivan is an audio artist and writer from London, whose interests have often revolved around urban analysis, and the ways in which we occupy the space around us. Since graduating with a 1:1 from Goldsmiths, UoL in 2020, Ivan has worked as a freelance sound designer on audio productions for the BBC, with shows including Short Cuts and Drama on 3. ‘Surveillance’, produced for Short Cuts with Derick Armah was played at the curated ‘In The Dark’ listening event for new producers.

Ivan was also a member of the original BBC Sound First cohort in 2021, which is a talent development scheme for upcoming sound designers, and recently worked as a researcher for independent podcast production company, Novel, based in London
